Description
Load and unload chemicals into or from tank cars, trucks, barges and storage tanks. May perform a variety of other tasks relating to shipment of products. May gauge or sample shipping tanks and test them for leaks.
Essential Functions / Key Accountabilities
- Verify tank car, barge, or truck load numbers to ensure car placement accuracy based on written or verbal instructions.
- Observe positions of cars passing loading spots into the correct positions at the appropriate times.
- Operate specialized material handling equipment such as railroad tank car unloading equipment.
- Monitor product movement to and from storage tanks, coordinating activities with other workers to ensure constant product flow while conducting tank to tank transfers.
- Record operating data such as products and quantities pumped, gauge readings, and operating times, manually or using computers.
- Check conditions and weights of vessels to ensure cleanliness and compliance with loading procedures.
- Operate industrial railcar mover.
- Connect ground cables to carry off static electricity when loading and unloading tank trucks.
- Seal outlet valves on tank cars, barges, and trucks.
- Remove and replace tank car dome caps, or direct other workers in their removal and replacement.
- Gauging tanks and/or reading meters, in order to verify contents, temperatures, and volumes of liquid loads.
- Test vessels for leaks, damage, and defects, and repair or replace defective parts as necessary.
- Unload railcars containing liquids by connecting hoses to outlet plugs and pumping compressed air into cars to force liquids into storage tanks.
- Copy and attach load specifications to loaded tanks.
- Start pumps and adjust valves or cables in order to regulate the flow of products to vessels, utilizing knowledge of loading procedures.
- Obtain product samples and send to laboratory for quality testing.
Education
High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
Experience / Required Skills
- Ability to compile, read, and compute, and interpret data
- Basic to Intermediate level computer skills in Microsoft Excel required
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
- Self-motivated and ability to work well with others
- Candidate must be able to pass the pre-employment test
- Able to obtain TWIC Card and pass background check
- New hires will also be evaluated under a 30/60/90 day probationary period

Physical Demands
- Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time, up to 12 hours per day.
- Working from a seated position for up to 12 hours per day.
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms multiple times per day.
- Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow or slippery surfaces.
- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
- Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
- Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Using upper extremities to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Raising objects up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds consistently from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
- Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Subject to environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
- Subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour.
- Subject to vibration. Exposure to movements of the extremities or whole body. Operate/drive utility vehicle
- Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
- Must be able to wear appropriate PPE for tasks as required. FRC uniform, hard hat, safety toe work boots, respiratory protection, safety glasses, chemical googles, face shield, gloves etc.
