We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing our analytics platform. Overseeing the development of next-generation analytics tools, provide troubleshooting support, and identify opportunities for refinement. Responsibilities will include data modeling, ensuring data integrity, and managing data relationships. Strong SQL skills, experience with data analytics tools such as Looker, Tableau, or Qlik, and proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or R are required. In addition, proven experience in data systems, with the ability to understand and work with various data environments is paramount.

Compensation:

We are committed to providing competitive pay and benefits that are in line with industry standards. We analyze and carefully consider several factors when determining compensation, including skills, qualifications and professional experience, which can cause your compensation to vary. This role has an annual targeted total compensation range of $90,000 - $120,000, which includes variable compensation (bonus) eligibility.

About the Data Engineering Team:

Our Data Engineering team at Bitfocus is central to our mission of using data to help end homelessness. We develop, maintain, and enhance analytics and reporting products for our Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS). Collaborating closely with product management, engineering, and customer success teams, we design and implement advanced analytics tools to deliver high-performance, scalable solutions that provide meaningful insights for our clients. We work with large datasets while ensuring data availability, integrity, and security, utilizing technologies such as SQL, Python, R and analytics tools like Looker, Tableau, and Qlik.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will:
  • Analytics Platform: Design, develop, and enhance the company's analytics platform to meet evolving business needs. This involves creating robust data pipelines, integrating diverse data sources, and ensuring the platform's scalability and reliability.
  • Data Transformation for Insights: Work with individuals and communities to convert their data into actionable insights. This includes providing guidance on data analysis, helping them interpret complex information, and enabling them to use data to drive informed decisions.
  • Dashboard Design for Homeless Services: Create and develop actionable dashboards that provide valuable insights into all aspects of homeless services.
  • Data Integration Subject Matter Expertise: Act as a subject matter expert on Clarity Human Services data integration, supporting cross-functional at Bitfocus. Facilitate collaboration across departments, providing guidance on integration and ensuring effective communication.
  • Collaboration: Leading collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop, deploy, and implement tools necessary to improve data integration and migration processes. This includes identifying and evaluating new technologies, as well as improving existing tools and processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Platform Development: Lead the development and refinement of our analytics platform, ensuring optimal performance and scalability as our data grows. Collaborate closely with software engineers, database administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure sound architecture and effective data handling.
  • Automation: Drive the automation of processes to streamline data quality control and improve efficiency. Develop automated unit-testing processes and data cleansing tools to minimize human error, ensuring accuracy and reliability of data.
  • HUD/HMIS Compliance: Ensure data adhere to HUD policies and procedures, meeting HUD standards for the data structure. Implement best practices for HMIS data analysis, contributing to tracking homeless populations across the United States.
  • Ad-Hoc Projects: Lead and complete ad-hoc projects, including data-related issue identification and resolution, development of new data-driven solutions, and collaboration with other teams to improve data management processes.
What you bring:
  • Remote Environment: Working remotely requires excellent communication and organizational skills. Experience working in a completely remote company and be comfortable with the unique challenges that come with remote work, such as coordinating with team members across different time zones and working in virtual environments.
  • Coding: You should have experience working with MariaDB/MySQL, which are popular relational database management systems used for storing and managing large datasets.
  • Python or R Scripting: Skilled in creating, modifying, and running scripts with Python or R. Proficient in developing algorithms, automating tasks, and analyzing data with relevant libraries and frameworks. Experienced in troubleshooting, debugging, and optimizing scripts for improved performance.
  • Planning and Organization: Strong planning and organizational skills, with a keen eye for detail. Skilled at coordinating tasks, managing deadlines, and ensuring thoroughness in all aspects of work. Consistently maintains high standards of accuracy and quality in project execution.
  • Multitasking and Adaptability: Skilled at handling multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Adaptable to changing priorities, able to maintain focus and meet deadlines despite evolving demands.
  • Social Services/HMIS: Experience in social services, and/or HMIS is essential for a Data Engineer working in the field of homeless services. Familiarity with the issues and challenges that homeless populations face will help you better understand and analyze the data related to this field.
  • Communication: Proficient in reading, writing, and oral communication in English, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Helping Others: Passionate about using data to drive social impact and committed to improving the lives of homeless individuals and families.
  • Data: Strong love for data and use it to make decisions. They should be able to analyze complex datasets, identify patterns, and draw insights that can inform decision-making processes.
  • Data Systems and Modeling: Strong grasp of data systems, with expertise in data relationships and modeling. Skilled at designing data structures, identifying patterns, and creating models for effective data management. Adaptable to various data environments, demonstrating the ability to learn and implement new systems quickly.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: A strong team player who enjoys working collaboratively with others toward shared goals. Thrives in a supportive environment, valuing open communication and mutual respect. Demonstrates commitment to building effective relationships and contributing positively to a cohesive team dynamic.
  • Independent Work: Self-directed and results oriented, and able to work independently and with others to complete projects on time and deliver high-quality work.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Possess excellent interpersonal skills to communicate and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Technology: Familiarity with a range of technologies, including databases, data visualization tools, and programming languages and should be willing to learn new technologies to solve data-related issues best and stay up to date with emerging trends in Data.
