Job Description

SUMMARY: Responsible for the operation and instructional leadership at a daycare or preschool facility. Trains and supervises staff, sets instructional objectives, and works to build a rapport with parents. Directs activities of preschool day care center at assigned facility to provide care for children by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Monitors and utilizes facility budget to authorize purchase of materials and supplies.
  • Plans school year calendar and monitor curriculum development.
  • Confers with parents regarding facility activities, policies, and enrollment procedures.
  • Confers with daycare staff regarding child behavior and well-being, recommends methods of modifying inappropriate behavior and encourages learning experiences.
  • Reviews and evaluates facility activities to ensure conformance to Federal, State, and Department policies.
  • Complies with California State Childcare Licensing regulations
  • Reviews and approves menu plans and food purchases.
  • Arranges medical attention for ill or injured child in accordance with licensing regulations.
  • Meets with school Principal, parents, and supervisor on a regular basis to discuss mutual needs and concerns.
  • Meets regularly with daycare supervisor to discuss items of mutual interest and need.
  • Purchases any needed equipment or supplies.
  • Works with Accountant to collect fees and discuss billing process.
  • Supervises registration and enrollment.
  • Keeps accurate attendance records for each child enrolled in the program.
  • Maintains staff and student records.
  • Collects and updates children's emergency forms.
  • Assists with recruiting, hiring, training/orientation, evaluation, and supervision of staff.
  • Provides support for teachers.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings.
  • Completes performance evaluations for all employees at least once per year.
  • Manages, facilitates, and schedules staff trainings as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages subordinate supervisors (Lead teachers) that aid in the daycare operation and supervision of part-time employees. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Agency's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, offering input into the hiring process with the Recreation Manager, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university in early childhood education or child development, or related field. Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of experience working in a licensed childcare facility or comparable group childcare program. Or an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited or approved college or university with a major in early childhood education or child development; and at least two years of teaching experience in a licensed childcare center or comparable group child care program. Or any combination of education and experience required of a childcare center director by State and Federal Licensing Regulations. (60 ECE units)

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as; discounts, interest and percentages.

  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to understand and manage the complexities of a preschool program. Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with parents, children, staff, and facility staff. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and regulations, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess current California Driver's License. Employee must use personal automobile for job related duties. Must possess current Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification. Must pass a Live Scan Criminal Background Check. Must possess a Certificate of completion of a preventative health practices course. (15 hrs.)

The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
