Job Summary

Oversees immediate and long-term maintenance and improvements of all the City’s trails, open-spaces, and the cemetery. Operates and maintains irrigation system, operates heavy equipment, maintains turf, performs tree/ limb removal using a chainsaw, and prepares grave sites for funerals. This role includes attending monthly meetings with various community boards, special projects, supervision of staff, and participation in other areas of Parks as a member of the Parks and Recreation team. This position requires interaction with the public, funeral homes, and contractors. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Manager.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform lead role in the maintenance, repairs, and improvement to the city’s trials, open-spaces, and the cemetery.
  • Responsible for daily operations to include maintaining irrigation system, turf management, landscaping, mowing, snow removal, holiday decorations, and other similar maintenance requirements.
  • Track budget spending and make budget requests to meet growing needs of the department. Process invoices, order materials, and supplies within budget allowances and maintain an inventory sufficient to expedite projects.
  • Maintain records of herbicide applications, backflow preventer testing, and CPR & First Aid training.
  • Develop work plans, manage seasonal staff routine work, and manage projects appropriately.
  • Assist with hiring personnel; responsible for overseeing the work of others; sets performance goals, mentors staff, and provides feedback through formal and informal means.
  • Take responsibility for safety conditions in trails, open-spaces, and the cemetery; assist with planning and leadership of crew safety and ensures employee safety is always a priority.
  • Proactively seek ways to operate and maintain areas of responsibility in the most cost-effective manner such as through energy usage practices and the evaluation of operating supplies and service contracts.
  • Assist in special events planning and implementing special events and programs involving staff and volunteers.
  • Develop plans for future needs of assigned areas of responsibility; assist with long-term capital plans for areas of responsibility. Actively participate in areas of responsibility planning, development, and design review processes.
  • Evaluate alternatives, prepare or review cost estimates, preliminary and final designs, bid documents, and contracts.
  • Cover on-call shifts for the Parks and Recreation department.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.


Supervisor Duties

  • This position is directly responsible for up to four (4) other departmental positions.
  • In this capacity, this position will be responsible for the direction, welfare, discipline, development, hiring, and separations of all subordinate positions assigned to this position.
  • Additionally, this position is responsible for the budget, expenditures, and resource management associated with this position.

  • Duties are conducted predominately in an out-of-door environment which includes exposure to extreme heat and cold or wet/humid conditions. Subject to loud noise and vibration, and maybe conditions including fumes, odors, dust, mist, and gases on a limited daily basis.
  • Encounters mechanical hazards daily. Occasionally, may be subjected to electrical hazardous and burns as well as working at heights above ground level while exposed to out-of-door conditions.
  • On a moderate basis may encounter hazards which could cause burns, including toxic/caustic chemicals.


Requirements:

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of experience and education is required.
  • One (1) year of experience and/or education in landscaping or heavy equipment operation required.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience required.
  • Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A), or the ability to obtain one within 180 days of hire, is required.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, is required.
  • Ability to obtain Backflow Inspector Certifications
  • Ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator Certification
  • Ability to obtain the following ICS Certifications: IS100 & 700

Required Capabilities

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Ability to proficiently read, speak, and understand English. Proficiency in non-English languages is highly valued.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, statistical and mathematical abilities and interpersonal skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write complex reports and distill information for many audiences.
  • This position requires close, distance and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to hear an average conversational voice in a quiet room, using one or both ears, at a distance of six (6) feet. Ability to hear sounds and signals indicating work and safety necessities.
  • This position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods of time. Utilization of hands and fingers to operate office computer keyboard and equipment required. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch if needed.
  • This position performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
  • This position requires effective proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use. The ability to adequately type quickly with few to no errors is also very important. This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients. Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass technology proficiency assessments prior to employment.
