Hourly Rate: $25.65 - $31.18

In order to meet the needs of the Library, the City of Carpinteria is now seeking to fill a Library Technician vacancy which requires bilingual Spanish/English speaking skills. Please do not reapply if your application for Library Technician is already on file.

The City of Carpinteria is seeking to fill a part-time Library Technician position. Part-time position averages approximately 19 hours per week including some evenings and Saturdays (not to exceed 999 hours per fiscal year). Part-time employees do not receive benefits, but are entitled to receive a leave bank. The ideal candidates will have some technical and clerical library experience including some course work in library science or related field. Bilingual English/Spanish skill is required.

Position Purpose:

To perform a wide variety of journey level technical library work including acquiring, cataloging and circulating materials for a specific function of the library; to perform technical and clerical work in support of various sections of the library; lead programs; and to provide general information and assistance to library patrons. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Library Page by the performance of the full range of duties assigned including assisting in the acquisition and cataloging of library materials. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties:

Typically, the depth and breadth of duties/assignments increase at each level and may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
  • Perform both general and specialized tasks related to the circulation, acquisition, or cataloging of library materials; assist in the processing and maintenance of library materials; provide assistance at public desks within the library
  • Prepare print and non-print materials for introduction into the library collection; catalog and classify books; and perform copycat cataloging.
  • Check out library materials to patrons; check in and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; register new patrons, collect lost materials fees.
  • Participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays; assist with seasonal and on-going programs and activities.
  • Input data into library computer systems; make corrections; add or delete entries on bibliographic records; correct author and subject entries.
  • Respond to patron in-person and telephone requests for library materials, services and basic reference information; assist patrons in completing requests for material not available in the local collection.
  • Participate in the promotion of library services and resources; assist in giving library tours to groups; assist in the preparation of informational handouts for public distribution including calendars and flyers.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of library facilities; ensure that events are publicized.

Minimum Qualifications

The following are minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Library Technician. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in library science or a related field.
  • Two years of technical and clerical library experience including the acquisition, cataloging, and circulation of a variety of library materials, preferred.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license not required, but desirable in the event needing to drive for City business
  • Must be available to work an average of 19 hours each week, including some evenings and Saturday rotations.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English speaking skills required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's)

Knowledge of:

  • Perform a variety of journey level technical and clerical library work.
  • Operate computerized cataloging, bibliographical and circulation system databases.
  • Keyboarding speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Perform routine reference searches.

  • Establish and maintain a positive and effective working relationship with the patrons, staff, and volunteers.
  • Assist the public tactfully and courteously; learn, understand, and communicate library rules to patrons of all ages; work with minimal supervision.

  • Principles and provision of outreach services.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; provide good customer service; perform routine clerical work; learn office methods, rules, and policies.
  • Perform a variety of library support services related to patron assistance.
  • Operate and/or instruct on the use of library equipment (e.g., computer terminals, laptops, , and film projectors)
  • Interpret and execute written and verbal instructions; and solve problems and develop methods for implementing solutions.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

Finger Dexterity: Using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.

Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Average Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

Average Visual Abilities: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products or operate machinery.

Physical Strength: Must be able to lift up to 15 (up to 30 lbs. with additional assistance).

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a standard office setting. Position requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; talking or listening, walking to observe Library patron activities; performs simple grasping and fine manipulation; uses telephone and writes or uses a keyboard to communicate through written means.

Position may work both indoors and outdoors. The work environment indoors is usually in a temperature-controlled environment.

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data establish facts, and draw conclusions.

Able to interpret a variety of technical instructions and can deal with multiple variables.

Mathematics Ability: Able to perform mathematical and statistical calculations.

Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias.

Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis, correct pronunciation (or sign equivalent), and variation in word order using present, perfect, and future tenses.

Ability to speak English and Spanish REQUIRED.

Ability to also read and write in English and Spanish is preferred.
