Nature of Work

The Crime Analyst position performs statistical and analytical research for the Northglenn Police Department involving the use of computer applications.  This position gathers and analyzes crime and management data for crime patterns, trends, suspect-crime correlations, target-suspect profiles, crime forecasting and unit workload assessment. Incumbent will also prepare reports and computerized mapping of crime and other data and present reports to staff and the public.

Duties and Responsibilities

(Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)


  • Performs statistical and investigative analysis of police crime data and recommends a course of action based on that analysis.
  • Work with geographic information system (GIS) software tools. 
  • Generate statistical summary reports on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.  
  • Query and manage large databases using tools such MS Access.  
  • Use electronic spreadsheets, desktop publishing, and statistical software (e.g SPSS) to manipulate, analyze, and/or present data. 
  • Perform requested programming using a variety of programming tools (e.g., SQL, HTML,). 
  • Provides information to support the City of Northglenn web-site Police section and maintain crime analysis web page.
  • Establishes procedures to retrieve integrate and analyze data from a large variety of sources and systems.
  • Develops crime mapping and analysis of spatially referenced data such as reports, calls for service, and sex registrants, utilizing various software programs (e.g. ArcView).
  • Designs and implements programs and reports for tactical, strategic, administrative and intelligence analysis.
  • Employs investigative and statistical analysis to forecast future crime occurrences by type of crime and target location in order to direct deployment and allocation of resources.
  • Reviews investigative reports for modus operandi pattern, series, or trends. Provides detailed statistical information to media, the public, outside law enforcement agencies, City Council and city departments.
  • Works in collaboration with other jurisdictions to collect cross jurisdictional data.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Statistics, or related field.   Plus two (2) years experience in a criminal justice environment performing data analysis/research or investigation of criminal activity; with a minimum of one-year experience in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of police data.
3 years experience as a Crime Analyst preferred.  
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
 

  • Considerable knowledge of crime analysis and crime mapping.
  • Experience with problem identification and problem analysis (COP/POP).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Function in a team environment and interact daily with both internal and external customers. 
  • Maintain confidential records and files.
  • Convey detailed information to the media, city council, and city departments. 
  • Attend patrol briefings and department meetings (e.g., Compstat). 

Supplemental Information

Must be at least 21 years of age.  Cannot have been convicted of a felony.  New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, polygraph or CVSA, background examination including local records check and sex-offender registry, drug screening, and fingerprinting through CBI/FBI. May not currently be under criminal or internal investigation.
