EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a Christian with a strong desire to bring others into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
  • Ability to teach basic Bible lessons to children and young adults.
  • High School Diploma/ GED minimum requirement.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have valid Driver's License.
  • Must have at least two seasons camp experience or youth work equivalent.
  • Prior leadership experience preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

General:Effective verbal and written communications, ability to multitask. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Must have ability to work and relate well with people. Must have a positive attitude toward helping and fostering children in their development.

Organization:The ability to maintain a directed schedule along with the ability to lead a large group through multiple projects in a timely manner. Must be responsible, detail oriented, and can take projects from beginning through completion.

Professional:The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment. The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals. Exercise good judgment and comfortable taking initiative with projects.

EQUIPMENT:

  • Proficiency required in Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher. Proficiency a plus in Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, Media Player, and Media Shout (or similar program).
  • Telephone, and computer, copy/fax machines.
  • Ability to operate mini shuttle after required training.


SCOPE OF POSITION

The primary function of this position is to lead the Middle School Day Camp group. This includes maintaining the safety, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, character, and skill development of all camp staff and campers. Work with Program Director and other Program staff to carry out activities, promote camper participation specifically for the Middle School Program. Oversee proper coverage of all aspects of the School's Out Summer Middle School Group, including sports skills, arts and crafts, movements, educational concepts, musical concepts, and various games. Middle School Lead will assist with preparation for the SOSDC and wrap-up of the program at the end of summer.

The SOSDC offers programs for campers 5-14, as well as a "Staff-In-Training" program for staff 14 and 15 years of age. Must have the ability and desire to work with children, parents, volunteers, and peers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative

  1. Provide oversight for Middle School counselors and volunteers, as directed by the Program Director.
  2. Create Weekly and Daily Staff Assignment schedules, working with staff to accommodate necessary time off and ensure proper breaks and coverage of program needs.
  3. Maintain accurate group schedule for Middle School camper group, including support staff that is assigned to the Middle School group.
  4. Ensure accurate group headcount of registered campers at all times, recording all required statistical information for reporting and tracking.
  5. Maintain a safe working environment: report all facility defects/problems to the Program Director.
  6. Enforce all rules that pertain to the camp, children's program, and facility on a consistent basis.
  7. Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.
  8. Enforce all Salvation Army policies, as well as any policies required by state or local government, and guidelines indicated in grants for the program.
  9. Work with Corps Assistant on maintaining current billing and payments from parents.
  10. Update registrations on recreational computer software and help maintain individual camper profiles.
  11. Responsible for all required statistical reporting, in cooperation with Corps Officer.
  12. Provide administrative support including filing, data entry, copies, and other assigned tasks.
  13. Maintain and distribute participants' personal medications; maintain medication logbook according to established procedures.
  14. Ensures proper care of building, including cleanliness, care of equipment and reporting all needed repairs/purchases to Corps Assistant.
  15. Serve as check-in/check-out point person, and communicate all reminders, and Reports to Parents get communicated to parent/guardians. Check ID of each person signing out a camper.


Behavioral

  1. Report needed behavior contracts to Summer Program Director as needed.
  2. Recognize spiritual need of individuals, which may require referral to the officer/pastor.
  3. Will handle disputes with participants, parents, staff, and campers in a professional manner with guidance of the as needed with coordination from Day Camp Counselors.
  4. Will communicate any camper, parent, or staff issues with the Program Director or Corps Assistant immediately. Follow up with appropriate documentation as directed.
  5. Will adhere to and implement discipline procedures, including necessary documentation and reporting, created for campers and staff, in cooperation with the Program Director.
  6. Will keep camper and staff issues confidential. Do not share issues with other campers, parents or patrons, news organizations or staff who are not involved.
  7. Will interface respectfully with staff, volunteers, parents, and campers of various socio-economic backgrounds.
  8. Enforce all rules that pertain to the camp, children's program, and facility on a consistent basis.
  9. Maintain a safe working environment: report all facility defects/problems to the Program Director.
  10. Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.
  11. Handle communication through phone calls to parents to confirm camp registrations and follow up on day-to-day situations.


Program

  1. Will be required to work a varying schedule, with some opening shifts each week (7am) and some closing shifts each week (7pm).
  2. Responsible for supporting the Summer Middle School Meet-Up afternoon program.
  3. Responsible for serving as direct Supervisor the Middle School camper group and associated staff and volunteers.
  4. Responsible to plan field trips, including park and swim days and other off-site activities for the Middle School Group.
  5. Responsible to ensure proper coverage of Middle School Group, including staff breaks and absences.
  6. Responsible to work with other Program Staff to create schedule for specific Middle School Group activities, independent of other groups.
  7. Responsible for working with Activity Coordinator on specific Chapel, Scripture memorization and devotions for Middle Schoolers.
  8. Responsible to fill-in for Counselors as needed, during absences or breaks.
  9. Responsible to assist with Chapel and other large group activities.
  10. Responsible to serve as Floater during Free-Time, especially ensuring coverage of hallways and bathrooms.
  11. Responsible to serve as back-up for other Program Staff, including Program Director, Activity Coordinator, Recreation Coordinator and Lead Counselors.
  12. Responsible to oversee "Ticket Store", helping campers redeem their tickets weekly for prizes.
  13. Serve as primary contact for counselors to assist with varying social/emotional and behavioral needs of campers.
  14. Facilitate any needed intervention for campers experiencing difficulty, including helping campers reset, take a break, redirect, etc). Report any additional need for help to Program Director or Corps Assistant.
  15. Assist with all elements of off-site activities, including meals, transportation, coverage, etc.)
  16. May be required to transport individual campers to the hospital in the event of an urgent medical situation.
  17. Drive The Salvation Army vehicles as directed by management to transport campers during off-site excursions. Follow all Salvation Army fleet procedures while driving and inspecting vehicles.
  18. Lead Morning Huddle with Program Staff and other staff groups as needed.
  19. Ensure proper PTM policies are being followed in all aspects of programming.
  20. Perform other assignments/duties as directed.
  21. Regular and punctual attendance is an essential job requirement.
  22. Flexibility and a cooperative spirit are crucial characteristics of the individuals who hold this important position.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminished performance.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. for short distance.
  • Must be in excellent physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the gymnasium and athletic field programs.
  • Must be physically able to give emergency care if a situation arises.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, squat, twist body, stand for short/long periods of time, kneel push, pull, have sense of touch, reach, grasp with hands and fingers, climb stairs, close vision, distance vision, smell, talk, hear, have eye-hand coordination, have manual dexterity, speak, and read English and work in noisy areas.
  • May walk or stand on varied surfaces. Will require work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • The following equipment may be used: telephone, computer equipment, electronic recorder, fax/copy machine, microphones, audio-visual equipment.


MISCELLANEOUS

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills-CPR/AED

Education High School Diploma or better

Experience-Previous experience working with children, preferably in a camp or After-School Club environment.

Licenses & Certifications- Food Handlers Card; Driver's License, CPR/First Aid Certificate
