The Salvation Army, Potomac Division an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, with locations in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC has a job opening for a Building Maintenance Mechanic at its Divisional Headquarters, in Washington, DC.

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Divisional Secretary for Business, the Building Maintenance Worker I is responsible for building, vehicle and equipment maintenance; office furniture set-up and configuration and running errands for the Potomac Division. The Potomac Division is comprised of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC and includes 56 Commands/Corps operations. The incumbent will perform routine repairs to include but is not limited to minor plumbing, drywall, painting, carpentry work and grounds keeping work to include landscaping and snow removal. He/she may assist with the selection of contractors, architects and other professionals to work on building projects. He/she may manage and oversee routine maintenance and repairs including but not limited to HVAC, elevator and mechanical systems. In collaboration with the Divisional Property Specialist, he/she will manage the vehicle registration and inspection process to include securing vehicle registrations for DHQ and floater vehicles; scheduling and securing vehicle inspections and routine maintenance and purchasing office furniture and equipment. The incumbent also runs errands to pick up office supplies, refreshments and mail/packages from the Post Office, provides shuttle services to and from the airport.

Building Maintenance (60%)
Performs routine building maintenance activities; performs minor pluming repairs required by leaking faucets and clogged toilets; performs carpentry work required to repair dents and/or holes in walls and paints walls; sweeps, vacuums, strips, and mops waxes floors; sweeps sidewalks; monitors lighting and changes light bulbs when needed. Monitors, coordinates, and supervises all aspects of building and grounds operations for Divisional Headquarters. Including serving as a liaison to vendors and technicians who come onsite for repairs and maintenance as well as processing paperwork to Assistant Divisional Secretary for Business of repair estimates to be approved and invoices for payment processing. Maintains the grounds to include mowing grass, trimming hedges, blowing leaves, and collecting debris; maintains the beautification of the grounds; snow removal. Monitors activities and visitors of building and grounds to ensure security; ensure security camera equipment is operational at all times. Cleans surroundings after each repair job; ensures that all tools are collected, and surroundings are left neat and clean; maintains all tools, supplies, parts, and equipment belonging to the Maintenance Department. Provide general maintenance as requested by DHQ officers at the Salvation Army Quarters including minor repairs and special projects as well as consultation on the selection of contractors to complete major work needed at the Quarters.

Furniture maintenance (20%)

Assembles and moves office furniture including chairs, desks, tables, bulletin boards, etc.

Errands (20%)

Drives floater vehicle in order to pick up materials and repair items needed for maintenance work; purchase emergency office supplies; pick up mail from the Post Office on a daily basis; airport pick up and drop offs as instructed by Assistant Divisional Secretary for Business.

Other Responsibilities

Assists in cleaning the kitchen and dining area. Performs other related work as required.

Materials and Equipment:

Handheld Tools, Power Tools, Lawn-Mower

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of general building and grounds maintenance practices and procedures. Knowledge of general office practices and procedures. Knowledge of effective and efficient record keeping practices and procedures. Knowledge of basic mathematics and computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to learn by method of on-the-job training including ability to follow instructions. Ability to perform routine and minor repair and maintenance activities of buildings and grounds. Ability to use and maintain maintenance equipment and tools effectively and in a safe manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience

Two years course work from a technical or vocational school in construction, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning as well as plumbing and electronics; and two years' experience performing maintenance and repair work for commercial building and grounds, Or Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications/Licenses:

Valid state driver's license.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to perform heavy lifting. Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects. Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.

Working Conditions:

Work requires driving a vehicle and working outdoors daily with exposure to physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
