SHIPFITTER JOURNEYMAN 
 
Job Summary 
Assembles, cuts, and grinds metal structural parts to include plates, bulkheads, strong backs, turnbuckles, and come-along.  Aligns parts in relation to each other.  Tacks and welds foundation and structural members.  Performs lay out work according to blueprints or reference lines.  Marks location of holes to be drilled, drives wedges and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding.  Performs other related tasks as assigned. 
  
Qualifications Standards 
  • Minimum 5 years of on the job experience, demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology and different metals required.  
  • Good burning, welding and craftsmanship skills.  
  • Mechanical ability preferred.  
  • T-1 welding certificate required for FCAW (flux core), SMAW (stick) optional but highly recommended. 
  • Ability to pass hands on assessment test conducted by NASSCO.  
  • Must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and on any assigned shift.  
  • Must comprehend written and verbal instructions (in English). 
  • Must be able to hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings. 
 
Shipfitter Qualifications 
  • A minimum of 3/4 years of Shipfitter experience 
  • OSHA 10-Hour Maritime Certificate 
  • Comprehensive understanding of ship repair terminology and ship compartment location nomenclature 
  • Possess a working knowledge of and be able to take measurements using the Metric and Imperial measurement systems 
  • Be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence in English 
  • Ability to effectively confer job related information to the structural supervisor and small groups 
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings (including weld symbols), sketches, specifications, and NavSea standard items and Navy damage control diagrams 
  • Physical/Medical - Successfully pass a Drug and Alcohol Screening 
  • Must be Physically and Medically qualified to wear required Personal Protective Equipment for the trade 
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds, bend, stretch, and stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, ladders, reach, twist, work at elevated heights and small spaces 
  • Must be able to successfully complete welding certification exams 
  • Must possess or be eligible to get a DBIDS (Defense Biometric Identification) 
  • Have flexible schedule, be able to work any shift (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) and do overtime if required 

Essential Job Tasks  
  • Lay out work from blueprint 
  • Cut, burn, grind, rip out and fit metal structural parts for placement on ship. 
  • Tack and weld foundation and structural members. 
  • Operate high reaching equipment including condors, sky climbers, scissors lift. 
  • Set up tools and equipment at job site.  Cleans up and removes scrap to nearest scrap tub. 
  • Operate overhead cranes and use rigging equipment. 
  • Other job duties as may be assigned relevant to the trade. 
  
Materials, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids 
Blueprints, welding equipment, grinders, cutting torch, hand tools, come-along, chain hoist, turn buckles, porta power, sky climbers, condors, dock arms, scissors lift and personal protective equipment. 
  
Physical/Mental Involvement 
Lifting up to 50 lbs. Standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed.  Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. Hearing warning signals, reading, and comprehending safety instructions.  Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee’s work area.    
  
Marginal Job Tasks 
General housekeeping in work areas.  May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings. 
  
Environmental Factors 
Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties.  Exposure to constantly moving machines, mechanical parts, and high levels of constant noise.
