What Is a Recording Engineer and How to Become One

A recording engineer records and edits music, dialogue, and other sounds for various applications. As a recording engineer, your job duties include setting up and operating recording equipment, directing artists and actors, and using computer software to edit the recordings. You may also be called upon to mix and master audio recordings, adjust microphones and other equipment, and synchronize sounds to visual media. Recording engineers work in recording studios as well as for radio stations, film production companies, and music venues.

A career as a recording engineer requires you have an extensive background in audio and sound engineering. You typically need at least an associate or bachelor’s degree in audio technology, broadcast production, or a similar field. You must have experience working as part of a sound production or recording team. Other important qualifications include mechanical knowledge of all recording equipment, familiarity with relevant industry computer software, and excellent communication skills.
