What Is an Online Tutor and How to Become One

Online Tutor

What Does an Online Tutor Do?

An online tutor provides academic support to students using distance-learning formats, such as video calls, instant messaging, and screen sharing. As an online tutor, you can have one-on-one tutoring sessions with a single student, or you can host group tutoring sessions for several students who are studying the same subject. Your duties are to prepare a lesson plan for each session and teach concepts and study habits to students who are struggling or simply want to reinforce their skills in a subject.

How Do I Become an Online Tutor?

The qualifications you need to become an online tutor depend on the company with which you want to work. Some online tutoring companies require you to have a bachelor’s degree in your subject, while others only require you to pass a subject area quiz. You need strong interpersonal and communication skills to build rapport with your students despite the fact that all of your communications are online rather than in-person. You must also have a computer and a reliable internet connection to work as an online tutor.
