What Is a Midwife Assistant and How to Become One

Midwife Assistant

What Is a Midwife Assistant?

A midwife assistant supports a midwife during birth and the preparation for delivery. They may also offer postnatal care after the baby is born. Job duties often include reading basic vital signs, preparing medication, interacting with the mother during birthing, and otherwise assisting the midwife. During the prenatal period, they may help the client practice various physical and mental techniques to prepare. While a midwife assistant might be a nurse or training to become a nurse, they generally do not provide direct medical care to the patient.

How to Become a Midwife Assistant

People interested in a career as a midwife assistant can complete a certification course or complete on-the-job training. Many people in this role are pursuing a nursing career or a career in midwifery. Some advanced certification courses include topics such as IV therapy and oxygen mask usage. Many employers expect a midwife assistant to be certified in basic life support. Job duties often include providing physical care or support to the client, reading basic vital signs, preparing medication, interacting with the mother during birthing, and otherwise assisting the midwife wife.
