A computer consultant helps companies troubleshoot problems with and identify solutions for information technology (IT) management. As a computer consultant, your job duties include evaluating computer and data network setups, identifying bugs or issues, developing and implementing solutions, and ensuring that network security is up to par. Your responsibilities may range from the initial design and setup of computer networks to providing ongoing maintenance and security. You need in-depth IT knowledge and a strong technical skill set to be a good computer consultant.

How to Become a Computer Consultant

To pursue a career as a computer consultant, you need the following qualifications: a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information technology (IT), at least two to three years of experience in the technology industry, and extensive knowledge about computer networks and operating systems. Some employers accept significant industry experience in place of formal education. There are several professional certifications you can pursue to hone your skills and make yourself a more marketable job candidate. Organizations such as CompTIA, Microsoft, and Cisco offer certification programs.
