Job Summary and Qualifications

This position is a 7on/7off schedule.

Under the direction of department leadership, provides leadership to the team of Medical Lab Scientists/Technicians in an assigned area (Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Hematology, Coagulation). Performs analytical tests on body fluids, cells, tissue and other specimens using specialized laboratory equipment tests and procedures. Provides technical/clinical assessment and prepares test results. Monitors quality control program.

Summary: 

Selects and defines methodologies to be used in the department. Writes policies and procedures and updates as needed to meet regulatory initiatives of HCA, TJC, CAP, CLIA. Establishes criteria for competency within the department and ensures that all personnel that work in that department are compliant, including CAP proficiency assignments and other competencies. Understands and implements CLSI guidelines for the department. Reviews and maintains compliance with CAP checklist guidelines. Participates on Laboratory inspection team for CAP. Maintains Meditech updates to dictionaries, builds new tests, interfaces and performs LIS validations when necessary and in conjunction with LIS Coordinator. Installs and validates new software upgrades on the analyzers in the department. Ensures completion of facility, division or corporate initiatives that apply to the department. Ensures that all maintenance and quality control (QC) is completed and documented according to policy. Reviews QC and evaluates peer comparisons monthly. Follows up on any QC failures to assure accurate patient results have been reported. Ensures completion of crossover studies for new lots of reagent and QC material. Performs necessary evaluations of instrument function as required, including (but not limited to) instrument correlations, AMR, linearity, precision and reproducibility. Ensures staff follow department policies. Assists with investigations of variances occurring in the department and initiates disciplinary action for non-compliant staff. Communicates with and provides satisfactory service to physician requests that fall within legal and regulatory scope of service by the laboratory for the department. Selects and monitors quality initiatives within the department, assuring benchmarks are met, formulating and overseeing action plans for completion or correction of deficiencies. Displays skill and accuracy in obtaining testing specimens, incorporating age specific collection techniques and the caring model to minimize patient discomfort and anxiety and maximize patient satisfaction. Performs all laboratory procedures in hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank following established policies and procedures to assure clinical accuracy and efficiency. Performs procedures in microbiology as competency and training allows. Including but not limited to: Culture set up, blood culture reporting, quick tests and gram stains. Maintains laboratory equipment to maximize clinical reliability and optimal function by operating equipment according to policy, performing preventive maintenance as scheduled and/or as required by established policy and procedures. Recognizes, evaluates, resolves and documents in the maintenance record any problems with equipment or procedures. Performs troubleshooting of problems and performs simple field repairs where necessary. Keeps supervisor and co-workers apprised of major malfunctions. Ensures timely reporting of consistent, accurate and reliable test results, using clinical judgment to integrate and relate data generated by testing procedures, recognizing and assessing possible discrepancies. Recognizes limitation of equipment and procedures. Considers age specific factors in assessing and reporting results, communicating significant or critical results to physicians in a respectful and efficient manner according to policy. Maintains a strong effective quality control program to ensure and safeguard high quality patient care, following protocols for running controls and verifying acceptable results. Records quality control results, takes action to correct problems identified through quality control measures (including repeating all affected patient samples if necessary). Keeps supervisor and director informed of quality concerns. Understands the LIS functions related to the position and takes accountability for remaining current on any updates when they occur. This includes, but is not limited to, real time quality control, instrument interfaces and auto-validation. Participates in required proficiency and competency assessments as required. Demonstrates an overall commitment to high clinical quality by remaining alert to possible sources of error and correcting any observed errors or breach of policy in an effort to hold all employees accountable for high quality service. Offers suggestions and participates in continuous improvement of processes in the laboratory. Miscellaneous duties: Assists with in-services, bench training, mentoring of students, ordering supplies and other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelors Degree required.
  •  Four years clinical lab experience or equivalent clinical lab training program. 
  •   Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist is required. Acceptable certifying agencies include: ASCP, AAB, and/or AMT.  
  •   Basic computer skills; attention to detail; strong analytical skills.
