Pharmacy Intern

Education: A high school education or equivalent required. The individual must be enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy and have a current Pharmacy Intern License in good standing in the state of Arkansas. Must meet all requirements set forth by the State Health Department and the State Board of Pharmacy.
Training and Experience: Should be able to perform the arithmetic calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solutions preparation. The essential functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory control. The usual intern functions associated with an institutional drug distribution systems. The manipulative and record keeping functions associated with the dispensing of prescriptions for ambulatory patients. Experience with typing of at least 40 words per minute, 10-key adding machine and/or computer systems and routine office procedures.
Job Knowledge: Should demonstrate appropriate knowledge and understanding of the healthcare institution and its pharmacy department. Should have thorough knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of his/her position, including standards of ethics governing pharmacy practice. Should have working knowledge of drug dosages, rules of administration and dosage forms. The procedures and operations relating to the manufacturing, packaging and labeling of drug products. The procedures and operations relating to aseptic compounding and parenteral admixture operations. The numerical ability to detect errors and accuracy in compiling records and calculating charges. The intern should have a working knowledge of the pharmaceutical medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing, dispensing and charting of medications in the institution.
DESCRIPTION
Performs technical (non-judgmental) functions of drug preparation, drug distribution and drug charge control of inpatients, outpatients and employees in accordance with established standards set forth by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and assists the pharmacist in ordering, receiving and returning drugs from wholesaler or direct supplier, maintains current patient profiles, represents the department as a receptionist, and performs other related work as required that is consistent with the laws and regulations.
Physical Effort: Maintains good physical well being. Job responsibilities require some lifting of up to forty pounds, walking, standing, bending and pushing of carts.
Mental Effort: Maintains good mental well being. Considerable amount of mental effort and concentration is required and varies from day to day with workload, must be able to check own work and be able to adjust speed of work as the need requires. Subject to regular interruptions by nursing personnel, pharmacists and other technical personnel.
