Gonzalez Companies is a partner managed firm that provides comprehensive Planning, Design, and Construction Management Services to large and small Water, Sewer and Utility Districts; Departments of Transportation; and municipalities. We are currently seeking a Transportation Engineer (I/II) to help serve our connection of clients and community. The projected range of compensation in Illinois for this job is $70,000 - $80,000.
  • Assist in the design and development of transportation projects including roadways, intersections, pedestrian facilities, and traffic improvements.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, plans, and 3D models using CAD software (e.g., MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D).
  • Perform basic to intermediate engineering calculations, including horizontal/vertical alignments, grading, drainage, quantities, and traffic control layouts.
  • Support preparation of project documents such as cost estimates, technical reports, design summaries, and bid packages.
  • Conduct field visits to support data collection, condition assessments, surveying coordination, or construction observations.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to develop design solutions and ensure project quality.
  • Assist with preparation of IDOT, LPA, or municipal submittals and ensure adherence to applicable design standards and guidelines.
  • Review and interpret topographic surveys, geotechnical reports, environmental documents, and utility data.
  • Participate in coordination with clients, utility companies, and permitting agencies as needed.
  • Contribute to internal QA/QC processes, documentation, and design reviews.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 0-5 years of experience in transportation, roadway, or municipal infrastructure design.
  • Experience or familiarity with MicroStation/OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Understanding of geometric design principles, drainage, traffic control, and plan development.
  • Ability to prepare or assist with design calculations, drawings, cost estimates, and technical documentation.
  • EIT/FE preferred; required for Engineer II level. PE-track candidates strongly preferred at higher level.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with ability to work independently as experience grows.
  • Familiarity with DOT, LPA, or municipal design standards is a plus.
