Position Summary:

A Tugboat Engineer will operate a company owned 2000 HP Twin screw towing tug. The tug will operate primarily in the Piscataqua River, directly adjacent to and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery Maine.

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with (and actively promote) all Safety policies and procedures including reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses to ensure adherence to our Number One Core Value – Safety, first in everything we do.
  • Must understand and comply with all Company safety policies and procedures
  • Clean or prepare work zone to eliminate possible hazards
  • The Captain shall be responsible for the overall command of the unit, its operation and all persons on board.
  • The Captain has the ultimate authority onboard for all matters affecting the safety and security of the unit, the crew, the cargo and the environment and shall take all necessary steps and precautions to prevent and mitigate the consequences of any accidents and incidents that may affect the unit.
  • Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary.
  • Determine course and towing speed on basis of specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and current.
  • Steer vessels to avoid reefs, outlying shoals, and other hazards to shipping, utilizing navigation devices, such as: radar, sonic depth finder, compass and sextant; and, aids to navigation, such as: lighthouses and buoys.
  • Ensure compliance of assigned operations with applicable federal, state, and company regulations and policies.
  • Prepare, monitor, and update vessel work lists and maintenance schedules.
  • Perform administrative, supervisory and other related functions, as assigned.


Knowledge Requirements:

  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

Certifications Requirements:

  • 6 Years of total experience and at least 2 years of Tug Boat Engineer experience
  • Mariners Credentials (MMC)
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW)
  • Master of Towing endorsement
  • CPR/AED First Aid Certification
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must be able to obtain a badge to work on secure Naval facilities

Physical Requirements:

  • Be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels.
  • Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders that have capacity limits of 300 lbs.
  • Be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted multiple times during the day.
