Job Description

General Statement of Duties:

Provides Basic Life Support including medical evaluation, treatment and stabilization of the critically ill and injured: responds to emergency rescue situations involving potential loss of life or bodily injury; maintains control, manages and directs patient care at the scene of a pre-hospital emergency; provides training and instruction to lesser trained personnel; performs other duties as required. Drive the ambulance in a safe efficient and orderly manner while obeying all traffic ordinances and regulations concerning emergency vehicle operations.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Responds to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured and transport the patient to a medical facility.

After receiving the call, drive the ambulance to address or location given using the most expeditious route, depending on traffic and weather conditions. EMT will observe traffic ordinances and regulations concerning emergency vehicle operations.

Upon arrival at the scene, parks the ambulance in a safe location to avoid additional injury.

Prior to initiating patient care, the EMT Basic will also "size up" the scene to determine that the scene is safe, the mechanism of injury or nature of illness, total number of patients and to request additional help if necessary.

In the absence of law enforcement, creates a safe traffic environment, such as the placement of road flares, removal of debris, and re-direction of traffic for the protection of the injured and those assisting in the care of the injured patients.

Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury and establishes priority for required emergence care.

Based on assessment findings, EMT will render emergency medical care to adults, children and infants in medical and trauma cases.

Duties include but are not limited to : opening and maintaining an airway, ventilating patients, CPR, and have common basic knowledge of AED and Cardiac monitor.

Provide pre-hospital emergency medical care of simple and multiple system trauma such as controlling hemorrhage, treatment of shock, bandaging wounds, and immobilization of painful, swollen or deformed extremities.

Medical patients include: assisting in childbirth, management of respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic, behavioral and environmental emergencies and any type of poisonings.

EMT shall preform searches for medical identification emblem as a clue in providing emergency care.

Additional care is provided based upon assessment of the patient and obtaining historical information.

These interventions include assisting patients with prescribed medications including sublingual nitroglycerin, epinephrine auto-injectors and hand held aerosol inhalers.

The Basic EMT will also be responsible for the administration of oxygen and oral glucose.

EMT shall reassure patients and family or bystanders by working in a confident and efficient manner. EMS shall avoid mishandling and undue haste while working expeditiously to accomplish the task.

Where a patient must be extricated from entrapment, assessed the extent of injury and gives all possible emergency care and protection to the entrapped patient and uses the prescribed techniques and appliances for safely removing the patient.

If needed, radios fire command for additional help or special rescue and/or utility services. Provides simple rescue service if the ambulance has not been accompanied by a Fire District Unit.

After extrication, provides additional care in triaging the injured in accordance with standard emergency procedures.

Complies with regulations on the handling of a deceased person, notifies authorities, and arranges for protection of property and evidence at a scene.

Lifts stretcher, placing in ambulance and seeing that the patient and stretcher are secured and continues emergency care to medical facility.

Drive the ambulance to the receiving facility, using the most expeditious route, depending on traffic and weather conduit while observing traffic ordinances and regulations concerning emergency vehicle operations.

EMS Shall assist in lifting and carrying the patient out of the ambulance and into the receiving facility.

After each call, restocks and replaces used linens, blankets and other supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures, makes a careful check of all equipment so that the ambulance is ready for the next run.

Maintain ambulance in efficient operating conditions.

Ensures that the ambulance is clean and washed and kept in a neat orderly condition.

In accordance with local, state and federal regulations, decontaminates the interior of the vehicle after transport of patient with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure.

EMT Basic is able to ride in the back of the ambulance on BLS runs and perform basic life support skills.

EMT Basic is able to learn the electronic reporting system to perform Patient Care Reports.

Additional examples of work performance:

Determine that the vehicle is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management, maintain familiarity with specialized equipment used by the service, attend continuing education, refresher training programs and mandatory staff meetings required by employers, medical direction, licensing or certifying agencies, meet qualifications within the functional job analysis, and turn in copies of all licenses, certifications and documentation required for job performance as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education, training, and/or experience, which demonstrates competence in each of the following:

Perform technical medical skills with a high degree of accuracy, understand and effectively deal with emotional and medical needs of victims of injuries, acute illness or psychological emergencies, maintain a professional and objective approach to the care of ill or injured persons, to learn new concepts in rescue, medical skills and techniques in pre-hospital care, perform a variety of limited mechanical work involved in the use, testing, and maintenance of rescue and medical equipment, to direct the work of and teach other personnel, to understand and follow oral and written instructions and orders, to maintain a professional attitude when representing the hospital and department, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, to assist other agencies, hospital personnel and the general public, to drive and operate emergency ambulance units, to author reports with narrative and numeric information and working knowledge of the street systems, addresses and layout of North Caddo Parish Hospital District.

Other Requirements:

The job performance requires the EMT Basic to operate emergency medical vehicles, move medical equipment and extract injured persons from a wide variety of situations. Situations can involve but not limited to vehicular, industrial and residential accidents, injuries or illness and occur anywhere in North Caddo Parish. At times, the work requires movement over various types of terrain such as hilly, steep, rock, rough and/or wet slippery surfaces. The EMT Basic at all times must be able to carry or assist to carry someone from the site of the injury to the mode of transportation and ride with the injured party to the hospital. In order to perform a physical assessment of the injured party, the Basic must be able to see, hear and communicate with the injured patient.

Work shifts are normally set as a 24 hour shift. Some shifts are and can be subjected to be longer. EMT must be prepared to stay overnight with enough uniforms and equipment to do so.

Uniforms MUST be kept clean and neat according to Hospital policy. the uniform shirt will be North Caddo EMS T-shirts or North Caddo T-shirts for sponsored events such as Breast Cancer awareness.

Uniform pants will be blue or black EMS pants.

Footwear will be black work boots or black tennis shoes.

Any other garment outside of this shall have the approval of the EMS Directory PRIOR to wearing.

All units are required to have two pagers and one radio. The EMT shall have the radio on at all times. If at any time a unit notices that equipment is missing, he/she needs tor report it immediately to the Supervisor.

Additional job duties or functions may be requested per administration to assist in other areas of the hospital within your capabilities.
