Purpose

The Interpreter will use consecutive and sight interpretation skills to assist with communication between limited or non-English speaking patients and staff members. This role provides navigation and coordination of care assistance as part of a health care team to achieve Neighborcare Health's goals for quality care, productivity, patient satisfaction and contract compliance. The Interpreter will work in partnership and joint accountability with other team members to achieve Neighborcare Health's Mission, Guiding Principles and productivity goals.

In this position you will:

  • Collaborate with patients, clients, staff, and community partners to identify and address the ways that systemic racism and other forms of compounding bias are root causes of disparities in clinical/mental health and homelessness in Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color and other communities that have experienced historical and structural oppression.
  • Provide consecutive interpretation services during patient appointments in the delivery of medical and/or dental care.
  • Provide sight interpretation services to patients and staff members as needed while assisting with paperwork.
  • Explain and advocate patient cultural sensitivities and norms to staff members.
  • Advocate and provide navigation services for patients as needed both internally and in the community.
  • Evaluate patient needs and coordinate patient care in person, by telephone or through EMR between staff members and outside agencies or providers.
  • Facilitate patient access for any referrals to outside agencies or specialty provider.
  • Provide telephone outreach to patients as directed or appropriate, check status and/or acquire needed information for patient care.
  • Coordinate interpreter services for patients using internal and external resources/agencies. Determine services to provide based on protocols established by interpreter group and clinic management.
  • Communicate Neighborcare Health policies and procedures to patients.
  • Respond to emergent needs and assist teams by calling taxis, ambulance, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Patient Services Supervisor or Lead Team.


Key Skills:

  • Foreign Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of a foreign (non-English) language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation.
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability to competently interpret in English and one or more other needed languages. Knowledge of medical and/or dental terminology. Knowledge of and ability to accurately interpret for patient and patient's care team. Knowledge of and skill in the use of computers and a variety of software programs and patient scheduling programs. Knowledge of and ability to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents. Ability to actively listen


Required Qualifications

  • DSHS Interpreter Certification, National Interpreter Certification, or pass Medical Interpretation Test(coordinated through Neighborcare)within two weeks of start date
  • 1-year interpreter experience working in a medical and/or dental setting


Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years interpreter experience working in a medical and/or dental setting
