This position is open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Union - AFSCME (BARGAINING UNITS 1, 3, 4, & 5).

Position Description:

  • Evaluates the past medical history and bio-chemical data of clients to determine the adequacy of their nutritional status;
  • Determines the level of risk for meeting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for this targeted population;
  • Develops individualized nutritional are plans and provides counseling to clients and their families on sound nutrition practices;
  • Performs WIC certifications and prescribes supplemental food packages to meet the nutritional needs of the clients;
  • Provides nutrition education targeting nutritional deficiencies and behavior modification;
  • Provides breastfeeding education, support and referrals for additional resources if needed;
  • Provides in-depth counseling to high risk clients with co-morbidities;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and utilize time management to service high client caseloads (20 clients/day);
  • Conducts Health Promotion activities such as individual and group education sessions and cooking demonstrations;
  • Works on a team with other health care professionals to monitor the progress of high- risk clients and to coordinate other needed health services;
  • Documents and develops care plans for all clients to summarize nutrition intervention and determine goal setting priorities;
  • Consults with client's referring physician to clarify orders and recommend intervention and best practices;
  • Conducts workshops to educate the clients, staff and public on Nutrition Practice Guidelines;
  • Prepares monthly reports from programmatic data to meet Performance and Results Based Accountability Metrics;
  • Documents nutrition services provided in electronic management information systems as required by funding authority;
  • Provides guidance and direction to lower level public health nutritionists and nutrition technicians; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications:
Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Dietetics, Foods and Nutrition or a directly related field; Or a Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Foods and Nutrition plus two years of work experience in public health nutrition experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience provided that the minimum education requirement is met.
Licensure, Certification or Other Qualifications: Registered Dietitian (RD) credential awarded by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Must be a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE : The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering "yes" or "no" to the question on the online application that asks, "Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?" Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
Selection Criteria
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
Previous experience with the theories and principles of life cycle nutrition.
Previous experience developing and conduction nutrition education programs.
Previous experience with the nutrition assessment process including planning and counseling.
Previous experience providing nutrition principles to pregnant, lactating and post-partum women.
Bi-lingual ability preferred.
