The Opportunity

The position Sr. Hardware Engineer works out of our Westford, MA location in the Abbott Vascular division.

What You'll Work On

  • Manage changes related to hardware that are associated with post launch (released) products.
  • Create Designs verification testing (DVT) protocols/reports in alignment with R&D guidance.
  • Assignments may include:
    • Capturing, analyzing, implementing, and validating applicable product or hardware design concepts requirements and designs.
    • Reviewing product/customer design requirements
    • Full life cycle steps of documenting, testing, and releasing updates to products
    • Perform technical studies.
  • Apply advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical problems.
  • Support the planning, organizing, performing, coordinating and/or directing of engineering work.
  • Expected:
    • Meet high reliability hardware design standards
    • Remain abreast of and consult on technical advancements

Identify and routinely use the most effective and cost-efficient practices to execute processes; continually evaluate their effectiveness and appropriateness.

Main Responsibilities

  • Performs system design evaluation of capital systems. Selects components, processes, and foundries. Proposes design alternatives.
  • Supports design changes for hardware to support features that are contained in the product definition.
  • Develops controlled changes to hardware design specifications and circuit designs and is responsible for technology selection.
  • Responsible for completing documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with business standards; Documents may include:
  • Troubleshooting issues and documenting resolutions
  • Requirement specifications for multiple systems
  • Participates in and supports different test phase efforts.
  • Understand and comply with applicable EHS policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Project Support:
  • Responsible for planning and conducting assigned projects, investigations and/or equipment;
  • Participate and/or assist other engineers in project tasks by applying standard engineering theories, concepts and techniques
  • Consults to project team on deliverables for feasibility, thoroughness, clarity, correctness and accuracy.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams to support organizational goals
  • Leading role in design reviews
  • Participates in and supports reviews held by other engineers on related projects and provides useful feedback
  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
  • Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Evaluates and selects appropriate components and technologies.
  • Position Accountability / Scope:
  • Works under the supervision of more experienced engineers who review results for overall accuracy, completeness and soundness of technical judgment
  • Recognizes risks versus the relative gains associated with actions
  • Understands a project's critical success factors and makes recommendations and decisions impacting those factors
  • Responsible to meet established objectives and goals
  • May assist in the training of personnel as directed by management

Experience/Background

Relevant hardware design, development, and testing experience, including a comprehensive familiarity with manufacturing processes (applicable to highly reliable electronic medical or similar devices).

Required

  • Comprehensive ability to develop new design features as part of existing systems.
  • Ability or aptitude to use various types of databases and other computer software
  • Ability or aptitude to provide solutions and contingency plans through the comprehensive review of alternatives
  • Proven track record of implementing changes to existing hardware design and related processes.
  • Advanced personal computer skills, including spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and specialized applications.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally

Desired/Preferred

  • Advanced credential in a relevant discipline/concentration and/or professional certification
  • Six-Sigma knowledge and experience, or courses in project management, Six-Sigma, leadership, training, Total Quality Management (TQM) and various technical applications
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model

Education Requirements

Bachelors Degree Electrical/biomedical engineering or a related field plus 6 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
