Surgical Assistant Job Summary
Our health facility is looking for a Surgical Assistant to assist with surgical operations. In this role, you will be tasked with sterilizing equipment and prepping the operating room before surgery. You will also provide patient care, prep patients for the procedure, monitor their vital signs during surgery, and give them both pre- and post-op instructions. As part of this role, you must verify each patient's medical history and update their electronic health records. You must have certification as a Surgical Assistant to apply for this role, although we may also consider hiring a Registered Nurse to serve as a first assistant (RNFA).
Surgical Assistant Duties and Responsibilities
- Obtain the medical history of each patient prior to surgery
- Sterilize surgical equipment
- Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures
- Assist surgeons during the procedure
- Monitor the patient's vital signs during surgery
- Provide patients with pre-op and post-op instructions
- Update electronic health records
- Complete CME (continuing medical education) credits
- Perform other administrative tasks as needed
Surgical Assistant Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred (Associate degree may be acceptable)
- Certification through the NSAA or NBSTSA
- BLS (basic life support) certification
- Operative experience
