What is creative strategy?

Creative strategy is a plan or approach that outlines how to communicate a brand's message, product, or service in a unique and effective way. It combines market research, brand objectives, and creative ideas to develop compelling campaigns that resonate with target audiences. Creative strategists work closely with marketing, design, and content teams to ensure that creative solutions align with business goals and stand out in the marketplace.

How does a creative strategist typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Creative Strategists work closely with various teams such as marketing, design, product, and sales to develop and execute effective campaigns. They often act as a bridge between creative and business objectives, ensuring that messaging aligns with brand goals and resonates with target audiences. Regular collaboration may include brainstorming sessions, presenting concepts, and gathering cross-functional feedback to refine strategies. This collaborative environment helps ensure that creative solutions are both innovative and practical, enhancing overall campaign effectiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative strategist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Strategist, you need a solid background in marketing, branding, and consumer behavior, often supported by a degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with digital marketing platforms, analytics tools, and creative software like Adobe Creative Suite is typically required. Exceptional communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for developing compelling, data-driven campaigns that resonate with target audiences and achieve business objectives.

Creative Strategy and Creative Planning are closely related roles within the marketing and advertising industry. Creative Strategy focuses on defining the big-picture ideas and messaging that guide campaigns, while Creative Planning handles the execution timeline and resource management. Both roles require collaboration and a strong understanding of branding, but they differ in their core responsibilities and daily tasks.

Do you need a degree to be a creative strategy?

A degree is not strictly required to work as a creative strategist, but many employers prefer candidates with a background in marketing, advertising, or related fields. Skills such as strategic thinking, creativity, and proficiency with tools like Adobe Creative Suite or data analysis are often more important than formal education. Relevant experience and a strong portfolio can also be key factors in securing a creative strategy role.

What does a creative strategy do?

A creative strategist develops and guides the overall creative approach for marketing campaigns, ensuring messaging aligns with brand goals and target audiences. They analyze market trends, collaborate with creative teams, and use tools like data analytics to craft effective concepts that drive engagement and brand awareness.

The Role

EGC is looking for a full-time Creative Strategy Director who is equally comfortable developing the strategy behind the work, putting the right words to it and ultimately presenting to client stakeholders.

Working closely with our VP Creative Director, you'll help shape the strategic foundation for brands and campaigns. From positioning and audience insights to creative briefs, messaging, and campaign narratives, this role will typically consist of 70% strategy and 30% copywriting.

You'll play an important role in both client work and new business, collaborating across creative, account, social, media, and leadership teams. You will also help us continue to thoughtfully integrate AI into our creative and strategic processes, identifying where it can make our work smarter and more efficient without sacrificing the thinking and creativity that require a human touch.

Brand & Creative Strategy
  • Develop brand positioning, messaging frameworks, brand voice, audience profiles, and other foundational strategy.
  • Lead discovery, including stakeholder interviews, competitive and category research, audience research, social listening, and market analysis.
  • Turn research and information into clear, actionable insights that creative teams can use.
  • Develop thoughtful creative briefs that give teams a strong strategic foundation.
  • Evaluate creative work against the strategy and provide clear, constructive direction.
  • Present and articulate strategic recommendations to clients and internal teams.
Copywriting & Brand Voice
  • Write high-level brand and campaign copy including brand narratives, campaign concepts and lines and key messaging.
  • Develop voice and tone guidelines for distinct and consistent brand communications.
  • Review comms for consistency and quality across touchpoints.
  • Partner with designers and other creatives to ensure ideas and execution work together.
New Business
  • Help shape the strategic story behind new business pitches, from identifying the opportunity and insight to connecting the strategy to the creative idea.
  • Present during pitches, prospect meetings, and presentations to client leadership.
  • Work with agency leadership and creative teams to identify opportunities and develop proactive ideas for both prospective and existing clients.
  • Stay informed on client industries, competitors, consumer behavior, and emerging opportunities that could lead to stronger work or new business.
Social Creative
  • Provide strategic and creative oversight for social content across client accounts.
  • Brief and collaborate with designers, editors, writers, and community managers to develop work that is both on-brand and appropriate for the platform.
  • Stay current on how social platforms, creators, communities, and audiences behave.
  • Help translate those insights into relevant creative opportunities for our clients.
AI & Emerging Tools
  • Incorporate AI into your day-to-day workflow where it meaningfully improves the process, including research synthesis, transcript analysis, concept exploration, copy development, competitive research, and presentation development.
  • Help build practical AI resources for the team, including prompt libraries, custom assistants, brand voice tools, and repeatable workflows.
  • Establish best practices and develop an agency point of view on the role of AI in marketing.
What We're Looking For
  • 6+ years of experience in brand strategy, creative strategy, copywriting, or a hybrid strategist/writer role, within an established agency environment.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates both strategic thinking and strong writing, including brand platform or campaign strategy work as well as examples that show range in voice and style.
  • Hands-on experience using AI as part of your everyday work, with the ability to speak to the tools, workflows, and applications.
  • The ability to work comfortably in an environment where every assignment may not come with a predefined roadmap.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within retail, education and healthcare.
  • Experience mentoring or providing direction to junior strategists, writers, or creatives.
  • An understanding of media and performance data and the ability to use those insights to inform strategy and creative.
  • Published thought leadership, speaking experience, newsletters, articles, or other industry contributions.

  • Flexible PTO and Summer Fridays (half days)
  • Hybrid work schedule
  • Medical, Dental, Vision benefits
  • 401K + employer matching
  • Life Insurance, Aflac and additional auxiliary discount programs
  • Company luncheons, outings and events
