Weekend Technical Support Engineer information

What is a weekend technical support engineer?

Weekend Technical Support Engineers are IT professionals who provide technical assistance to customers or employees during weekends. They troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues, ensuring that users receive timely support outside regular business hours. These engineers often work remotely or on-site, depending on the company's needs, and may handle escalations or critical incidents that occur during weekends. Their role is crucial in maintaining service availability and customer satisfaction around the clock.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend technical support engineer?

To excel as a Weekend Technical Support Engineer, you need strong troubleshooting abilities, in-depth technical knowledge of relevant systems, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ticketing systems like Zendesk or Jira, remote support tools, and certifications such as CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified are highly valued. Outstanding communication, patience, and the ability to work independently under pressure are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure timely and effective resolution of technical issues, maintaining high customer satisfaction during off-peak support hours.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend technical support engineers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Technical Support Engineers often encounter unique challenges such as handling high-priority incidents with limited on-site resources and collaborating with colleagues who may not be immediately available. Engineers in this role typically need to be proactive in documenting solutions and escalating complex problems to weekday teams, ensuring seamless handovers and minimizing downtime for clients. Building a robust knowledge base and developing remote troubleshooting skills can greatly enhance success in this weekend-focused position.

You'll make a significant impact by enhancing safety, reliability, and operational efficiency in rail systems. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with teams across the business (operations, project reliability boards, and engineering teams), lead improvement projects to reduce train maintenance costs, ensure compliance with safety standards, and much more.

We'll look to you for:

  • Leading improvement projects to reduce train maintenance and operation costs while ensuring compliance with the specified fleet maintenance regime, legislation, and controls such as concessions.

  • Planning and ensuring delivery readiness (including BoMs, work instructions, and configuration) for planned maintenance activities as defined by the Vehicle Maintenance Schedule.

  • Helping to implement customer variation orders, train presentation/customer ambiance improvements, and managing risks and opportunities to enhance safety, reliability, and profitability.

  • Conducting incident root cause analysis and performance attribution in accordance with railway group standards (e.g., 'The Rule Book').

  • Supporting the Project Reliability Board to implement containment and countermeasures on identified key reliability failure modes.

  • Supporting day-to-day operations teams in resolving fleet issues, including participating in out-of-hours on-call or night shift duties as part of a roster.

  • Ensuring strong engineering knowledge of Wayside systems, including ATC, Wireless Mesh Networks, Wireless Radio, Guideway Switches, and rolling stock maintenance policies.

  • Driving cross-functional projects autonomously and adapting to the changing needs of the business.

  • Familiarity with fleet maintenance or asset management environments.

  • A certification or communication skill: Demonstrated project planning/management skills, governance, and execution.

  • Problem-solving abilities, including experience with root cause analysis techniques.

  • Understanding of key engineering processes such as risk assessments and Field Requests.

  • Relevant engineering experience in similar industries (e.g., public transportation) with some management responsibilities.

  • Contribute to innovative projects

  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries

  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning

You don't need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you'll be proud. If you're up for the challenge, we'd love to hear from you!
