What is a weekend phone triage?

Job description

Triage Nurse

Compensation: $25.08 to $40.00 per Hour

Job Type: Full-Time | Non-Exempt | On-Site | Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

We have partnered with a dedicated non-profit community health organization to recruit a full-time Triage Nurse (Open to either Registered Nurse / RN or Licensed Practical Nurse / LPN). Operating in a stable, daytime clinic setting with no weekend shifts, this position plays an essential role in delivering accessible primary health care services. This role is primarily focused on high-level clinical phone assessment, providing a perfect opportunity for an experienced nurse looking to utilize their strong critical thinking, symptom evaluation, and patient communication skills in a structured office environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide professional assessment of patient health concerns primarily over the telephone (approximately 90% phone interaction), using clinical knowledge and established protocols without the advantage of visual or face-to-face inspection.
  • Determine the severity of patient symptoms across all age groups, directing callers to appropriate emergency services when critical, or recommending standard medical follow-up and health education based on triage protocols.
  • Coordinate medication refills with providers and pharmacies, and assist with patient referrals to physicians, specialists, and ancillary services.
  • Provide occasional in-person triage and patient navigation assistance in the clinic lobby when needed.
  • Support clinic medical assistants with clinical guidance and task coordination during busy operational windows.
  • Assist in the development, review, and documentation of formal clinical protocols related to triage job functions.
  • Maintain absolute patient confidentiality at all times and document all assessments, recommendations, and patient interactions meticulously within the electronic record.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required
  • Current, unrestricted State of Kansas licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) required.
  • Current CPR certification (or willingness to obtain within the first 30 days of employment)
  • Previous nursing experience required so you can handle clinical phone triage, coordinate medication refills, and manage potentially distressing calls; prior experience in public health, outpatient primary care, or critical care environments is highly preferred
  • Ability to handle stressful or intense patient calls with high socio-economic and cultural sensitivity
  • Strong technical and computer skills, with a thorough knowledge of modern office practices and computerized health systems
Benefits:
  • Competitive base hourly pay scale ranging from $23.08/hr up to nearly $40.00/hr, tailored to your specific licensure track, nursing experience, and years of service
  • Predictable Monday through Friday schedule with no evenings, overnights, or weekend requirements
  • Generous paid time off (PTO) program starting at 15 days annually and increasing with years of service
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance packages
  • Robust retirement planning
  • Employer-provided short-term and long-term disability insurance coverage
  • Flexible cafeteria plan options for additional customized benefits

Note on Compensation: The listed compensation range represents the full scale from a starting LPN rate up to the maximum experienced RN tier. The final determined rate will be based on a candidate's specific licensure (RN vs. LPN), verified years of nursing service, and alignment with the organization's non-profit structure.
