What does an OB Triage Nurse do?

An OB Triage Nurse is a registered nurse who specializes in assessing and caring for pregnant patients who come to the hospital with concerns or complications. They evaluate patients for labor, monitor vital signs and fetal heart rates, and determine the urgency and type of care needed. OB Triage Nurses play a critical role in quickly identifying emergencies, providing education, and coordinating with doctors and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OB Triage Nurse?

To thrive as an OB Triage Nurse, you need expertise in obstetric nursing, fetal monitoring, patient assessment, and a valid RN license, often with specialized training or certification in obstetrics. Familiarity with electronic medical records, fetal heart rate monitors, and labor and delivery protocols is essential. Strong communication, critical thinking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure timely and accurate assessment, effective patient care, and safety for both mother and baby in urgent and dynamic clinical situations.

What are some common challenges faced by OB Triage Nurses during busy shifts, and how can they manage workload effectively?

OB Triage Nurses often encounter high patient volumes and rapidly changing clinical situations, particularly during peak hours or when multiple laboring patients arrive simultaneously. Managing these demands requires strong prioritization skills, effective communication with the healthcare team, and the ability to quickly assess and triage patients based on acuity. Utilizing standardized triage protocols, staying organized, and collaborating closely with physicians, midwives, and other nursing staff are essential strategies for maintaining quality patient care and reducing stress during busy periods.

Our competitive compensation and benefits package places us as your top choice in the region. While OB Triage is technically an outpatient service, it functions much like an inpatient acute-care setting. APPs evaluate patients presenting with obstetric concerns, determine appropriate treatment and disposition, and coordinate admissions when indicated.

This individual will play an integral role in coordinating daily operations, developing schedules, supporting team members, and partnering with physicians, residents, nursing, MFM, and Labor & Delivery leadership to ensure highโ€‘quality, efficient patient care.

OB Triage offers an exceptional environment for an APP who enjoys clinical complexity, collaboration, and leadership. The team benefits from strong support from both the OB resident and attending physician teams, creating an environment that promotes learning, collaboration, and professional growth. With strong collaboration from resident and attending teams and an environment that supports ongoing learning, this is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced APP looking to make a greater impact through clinical leadership, mentorship, and patientโ€‘centered care.

Key Highlights:
  • Provide direct clinical care to patients presenting to OB Triage, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and appropriate disposition or admission.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for approximately 5โ€“8 APPs.
  • Develop and maintain the daily APP staffing schedule to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Respond to team callโ€‘outs and work collaboratively to identify and fill staffing gaps.
  • Communicate with resident and attending teams regarding triage staffing and operational needs.
  • Serve as a key liaison between OB Triage, MFM, Nursing, Labor & Delivery leadership, IT, and other clinical partners.
  • Conduct and facilitate annual performance reviews for APP team members in collaboration with physician and administrative leadership.
  • Support recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, orientation, and professional development of APP staff.
  • Assist with maintaining credentials and clinical privileges for APP team members.
  • Organize and lead regular APP team meetings.
  • Participate in financial and operational discussions related to the triage service.
  • Participate in safety reviews, incident reporting, quality improvement, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and implement clinical workflows, standards, and algorithms that promote consistent, highโ€‘quality patient care.
  • Work collaboratively with Compliance and Coding to support appropriate APP billing practices and optimization.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, patient flow, communication, and the overall triage experience.
  • Maintain effective communication among APPs, physicians, residents, nurses, nurse managers, educators, and other members of the care team.
  • Participate in departmental and serviceโ€‘line meetings and initiatives.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for APP team members.
  • Provide other related clinical and leadership responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in nursing or a master's degree in a healthcare-related field, including Physician Assistant education.
  • Current Massachusetts licensure.
  • Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or Midwife as applicable.
  • Controlled substance authorization.
