Job description

Weekend Public Services Assistant/ Library Assistant

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the part-time weekend public services assistant is responsible for opening and closing the University Library on Saturdays (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) and on Sundays (11:00 AM to 9:00 PM), with schedule hours subject to change based on library and university needs, supervising Graduate Assistants and work study students assigned to work on those days, and for providing public service and basic research assistance to library users in person, by telephone, and electronically.

This position supports weekend circulation and library operations, assists patrons with accessing library resources and services, and helps maintain a welcoming, safe and service-oriented environment within the library. The weekend Public Services Assistant is expected to work independently, exercise good judgment and support the daily operation of the library during weekend hours. Other duties assigned as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference services.
  • Follow procedures in opening and closing the library and ensure the safety and security of the building during weekend hours.
  • Supervise Graduate Assistants and Work Study Students assigned to work on weekends.
  • Assist patrons with print and electronic library resources.
  • Provide support for weekend library instruction and outreach activities, as needed.
  • Assist with the library's online presence and digital content.
  • Perform circulation and other routine library service functions as needed.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong customer service and public service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and library personnel.
  • Must be able to work independently and respond appropriately in routine building or patron situations during weekend operating hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library, academic support, customer service, or higher education environment.
  • Experience supervising student workers or staff.
  • Familiarity with academic library resources and services.
  • Master of Library Science (MLS/MLIS/MSIS) from an ALA accredited library science program or another relevant graduate degree.
  • Knowledge of major software applications for word-processing, spreadsheets, and web related searching.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires mobility throughout the library, including the ability to move between floors, push carts, bend, reach, use step stools and lift or move materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Position also may occasionally require extended periods of standing, walking, and computer use.

Compensation: $20.60 per hour, Non-Exempt / 16 - 20 hours per week
