REPORTS TO: Operations Coordinator

PROGRAM: Bailey's Community Shelter

Position Summary:
FACETS is hiring a part-time weekend cook. Shifts will alternate each week across breakfast/lunch (6:00am - 1:30pm and lunch/dinner (10:30am - 6:30pm).

The Kitchen Cook plays an exciting and essential role in fueling the daily life of our 52-bed homeless shelter, where three meals are served every single day of the year, and even more guests are welcomed during hypothermia season. This position brings creativity, skill, and heart to preparing large-scale, nutritious meals that support the health and wellness of our residents. The Kitchen Cook helps keep the kitchen running smoothly and safely, ensures the highest standards of food quality and sanitation, and creates a warm, inviting and culturally appropriate dining experience that residents can rely on. This is a meaningful opportunity to use your culinary talent to make a direct and lasting impact on individuals experiencing homelessness.
About the Organization:
FACETS is a non-profit organization that opens doors by helping parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County. We meet their emergency needs through our wrap around services and community partnerships and help individuals and families experience safe and stable housing after years of uncertainty and instability. We strive to ensure that every person in our community has a place they can call home. Here at FACETS, every team member plays a role in making a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manages daily meal operations, coordinating the preparation and service of 3 meals a day as well as snacks.
  • Prepares nutritious, balanced, and healthy meals for clients accommodating the dietary, religious, medical, and cultural restrictions of clients.
  • Oversees meal preparation and service, including greeting guests and fostering a welcoming, respectful environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen and storage areas, ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations, including proper food storage, handling, and preparation practices.
  • Develops cost-effective meal plans within budget in collaboration with the Operations Coordinator and Program Director.
  • Monitor food inventory levels and order supplies as needed, ensuring efficient stock management and proper rotation of food to minimize waste.
  • Uphold FACETS’ values of dignity, respect, and compassion with interacting with residents and guests.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • High School Diploma.
  • ServSafe certification is required.
  • Previous kitchen or commercial food service experience required.
  • Ability to prepare and serve meals for large groups.
  • Strong time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with diverse and vulnerable populations.
  • Must pass criminal background checks
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, good driving record, and personal car insurance.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and working in a kitchen environment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to attend occasional meetings at other FACETS office locations within Fairfax County, including 3 annual organization-wide fundraising events each year.

Salary Range:
Hourly: $18-$21 per hour.
