Responsibilities

The Virtual Care Charge Nurse provides real-time coordination and administration for the Virtual Care Program. This role serves as the primary escalation point for virtual nurses, virtual PSAs (Patient Safety Attendants), and Surveillance Monitoring Staff. Using multiple virtual care and monitoring platforms, the Virtual Care Charge Nurse oversees staffing, workflow prioritization, and patient safety escalations to support safe, efficient, and compliant virtual care delivery across assigned departments.

  • Maximizes the effectiveness of virtual nurses, virtual PSAs, and surveillance monitoring staff during the assigned shift.
  • Serve as a resource for patient safety concerns, workflow issues, and technology-related barriers from virtual and bedside teams.
  • Manage staffing and patient assignments for virtual admissions, discharges, rounding, observation, and remote monitoring activities.
  • Adjust virtual care coverage in response to census changes, call-ins, admissions, discharges, and surge capacity needs.
  • Prioritize patients and virtual care tasks based on acuity, safety risk, and active alerts.
  • Ensure escalations and interventions follow established facility algorithms, policies, and documentation standards.
  • Maintain clear and timely communication with bedside charge nurses, unit leadership, providers, and clinical managers.
  • Participate in shift hand-offs by communicating staffing status, high-risk patients, unresolved escalations, and operational concerns.
  • Collaborate with IT, vendors, and clinical leadership to escalate and troubleshoot virtual care and remote monitoring system issues.
  • Support adherence to regulatory, organizational, and departmental policies related to virtual care.
  • Serve as a clinical and operational resource for virtual staff, providing guidance on workflows and best practices.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and operational projects related to the Virtual Nursing Program.
  • Assists the Management Team in maintaining staff competencies and other tasks that may be assigned to them
Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse from an accredited school of professional nursing
  • Current Multistate Compact RN License
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care
  • Comply with regulatory requirements, guidelines, and organizational policies
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage multiple workflows in a fast-paced virtual environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including remote communication technologies

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of inpatient or acute care nursing experience
  • Prior charge nurse, virtual nursing, or telehealth experience
  • Experience supporting remote patient monitoring or virtual observation programs
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and multiple virtual care and monitoring platforms
