What is a virtual informatics nurse?

A Virtual Informatics Nurse is a registered nurse who specializes in integrating nursing science with information technology to improve patient care, typically working remotely or in virtual environments. They help design, implement, and optimize electronic health records (EHRs), provide training and support to clinical staff, and analyze healthcare data to enhance workflows and outcomes. These professionals act as a bridge between clinical staff and IT departments, ensuring that technology solutions meet the needs of both patients and healthcare providers. Their role is increasingly important as telehealth and digital health solutions become more common.

How does a virtual informatics nurse typically collaborate with clinical and IT teams to improve patient care processes?

As a Virtual Informatics Nurse, you'll play a key role in bridging the gap between clinical staff and IT professionals. You will often participate in virtual meetings to gather input from nurses and physicians, translate their workflow needs into technical requirements, and collaborate with IT teams to implement or optimize electronic health record systems. Effective communication and problem-solving are essential, as you'll be responsible for ensuring that digital solutions truly support safe and efficient patient care. This collaborative environment fosters professional growth and exposes you to both clinical operations and emerging healthcare technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual informatics nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Informatics Nurse, you need a solid background in nursing practice, informatics, and healthcare data management, typically supported by an RN license and additional informatics training or certification. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), clinical decision support systems, and data analytics platforms is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are critical soft skills for facilitating collaboration between clinical and IT teams. These skills ensure effective integration of technology into patient care, enhancing outcomes and operational efficiency in virtual healthcare environments.

  • Prepare providers and champions for go-live, including Go-Live Facilitator preparation, workflow education, and readiness reinforcement.
  • Conduct and/or support provider training, including group sessions and 1:1 engagements, to address concerns, workflow impacts, and adoption barriers.
  • Develop and/or coordinate provider-facing communications and materials to support adoption and standardization.
  • Support provider champion training and education, including onboarding, orientation, role expectations, and escalation pathways.
  • Conduct product demonstrations during facility/division kickoffs and other stakeholder sessions, tailoring messaging to the audience and workflow impact.
  • Support the completion and quality of provider engagement deliverables, including provider engagement workbooks, readiness artifacts, issue logs, and feedback summaries.
  • Help establish and sustain provider change champion groups by assisting with meeting preparation, agendas, content development, and action tracking.
  • Assist with post-go-live office hours by facilitating sessions, triaging issues, identifying themes, and escalating concerns as appropriate.
Go-Live Coverage & At-the-Elbow Support
  • Provide on-site and/or virtual go-live coverage for providers and clinical teams, including at-the-elbow support, rounding, and rapid workflow troubleshooting.
  • Identify recurring adoption barriers and collaborate with implementation, training, and optimization teams to address root causes.
  • Support issue gathering, fact-finding, and resolution processes, and communicate recommendations and solutions clearly to a variety of stakeholders.
Education & Clinical Content Development
  • Support the development of engagement and education content (provider tip sheets, workflow guides, specialty-specific training materials, ambifi's content, and FAQs).
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training strategies and materials and recommend iterative improvements based on frontline feedback.
  • Collaborate with clinical leaders, trainers, and project teams to ensure content aligns with enterprise standards while reflecting real-world workflow needs.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and organizational learning by sharing lessons learned across implementation waves and sites.
Expanse EMR Optimization
  • Partner with the EMR Optimization team to support optimization initiatives, including stakeholder meetings, workflow reviews, requirements gathering, and feedback synthesis.
  • Provide structured provider feedback to inform EHR build decisions, enhancement prioritization, and usability improvements.
  • Support pilots and adoption measurement for optimization projects.
  • As needed, contribute to related MEDITECH Expanse technology and innovation initiatives, including ambient listening, the mobile Expanse app, digital adoption platforms, and other provider-facing tools.
  • Support product development efforts by translating clinician needs into clear workflow requirements and actionable feedback for design and build teams.
  • Attend and present agenda items during Enterprise Provider Advisory Group meetings.
Additional Responsibilities
