Job description

Registered Nurse Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO)

The Registered Nurse Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) serves as the principal advisor to leadership and other key stakeholders, ensuring the standardization of best practices across all facilities. The CHIO leads organizational change, fosters interprofessional collaboration, and contributes as an active member of a nationwide Veterans Health Administration (VHA) team dedicated to advancing a successful health informatics infrastructure. This role supports national strategies for optimizing workflows and enhancing knowledge management within clinical systems used by staff across all disciplines.

The CHIO participates in Veterans Affairs Central Office (VACO) initiatives to ensure that health informatics is firmly established as a recognized professional domain within VHA. This role is integral in identifying, developing, and disseminating best practices across the enterprise. The CHIO provides leadership in the creation and implementation of informatics solutions and technologies that support all domains of practice.

This position oversees the health informatics discipline by establishing effective and efficient clinical and administrative systems, designing meaningful decision-support tools, and managing calculated risks with appropriate mitigation strategies. The CHIO fosters continuous learning by advancing informatics knowledge that supports evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and research. Additional responsibilities include leading designated projects.

The CHIO promotes leadership and professionalism by facilitating communication that strengthens internal and external agency partnerships, aligning nursing and health informatics best practices across the enterprise. The role is accountable for implementing, evaluating, monitoring, and analyzing clinical and health processes to identify strategies that advance health data, improve information systems, support innovation, and enhance clinical outcomes.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the development, organization, and implementation of informatics solutions for both clinical and non-clinical needs.
  • Provide guidance and supervision of the informatics program to ensure effective resource utilization.
  • Participate in budget discussions and planning with VISN and facility leadership and staff. Anticipate future informatics requirements and recommends necessary funding.
  • Assess and evaluate the impact of technology and data utilization on patient care delivery policies and programs to support leadership objectives and organizational goals.

Preferred experience: Strong facilitation skills in group problem-solving and performance improvement initiatives. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Excel. Demonstrates excellent organization, communication, writing, and time management abilities. Experienced in data tracking, management, and analysis. Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards.

Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory.

Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday.
