Job description

About 1X
We're building humanoid robots that work in home - doing the chores, handling the tasks, and giving people their time back. Simple, but it's not.
To do this right, we have to solve robotics, AI, manufacturing - at the same time, at scale, in a form factor that has to be safe enough to live with your family. If you're inspired by this, you'll thrive here. We've been at this since 2014 and we're at the point where the hard problems are behind us and the hard work is in front of us.
NEO is our flagship - a home robot designed to move, learn, and operate in the real world alongside real people. We're not demoing it - we're shipping it. We're excited to meet you, if this excites you.
If you've spent your career working on problems that matter and want to see them actually reach the world - this is that moment. We're scaling, we're hiring with intention, and we need people who want to build something that will genuinely change how humans spend their time - safely creating abundance for all.
About the Team
The Apps team builds software for users to control Neo and the systems that developers use to build their own apps. Mobile and web apps built by this team are used to deploy, monitor, and manage humanoid robots in the real world; provide operational visibility; and give consumers an easy way to use their Neo in their home.
Your Charter
Lead the development of the graphics, visualization, and immersive rendering systems that power 1X's VR teleoperation platform. You will build the interfaces consumers and operators rely on to understand robot state, interact with live environments, and safely control humanoid robots. You'll build optimized video/audio transport to stream at the lowest possible latency all throughout the stack.
Key Outcomes
  • Design and deliver high-performance, low-latency graphics pipelines that enable responsive VR teleoperation of humanoid robots.
  • Build immersive visualization apps that provide operators with real-time situational awareness using camera feeds, depth data, haptics, audio, and other robot sensor information.
  • Improve rendering performance, responsiveness, and reliability across GPU, CPU, and networking systems to support ultra low-latency real-world robot operations.
  • Partner with software, operator, and technician teams to integrate live robot data into intuitive operator interfaces.
  • Establish scalable graphics architecture and engineering best practices that support the continued growth of 1X's teleoperation platform.

Key Competencies
  • Deep expertise in real-time graphics programming and rendering optimization especially in video/audio/VR.
  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to balance graphics performance, latency, and user experience.
  • Excellent C++ engineering skills with experience building performance-critical software (especially on mobile or VR).
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across robotics, software, and infrastructure teams.
  • Ability to drive technical direction and deliver complex systems in a fast-moving startup environment.

Minimum Requirements
  • 6+ years of professional experience (Senior) or 10+ years (Staff) developing real-time graphics or visualization systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Graphics, Games, or a related technical field.
  • Strong experience with C++ and modern graphics APIs such as Vulkan, DirectX 12, Metal, or OpenGL.
  • Experience developing real-time rendering systems, game engines, realtime networking, or VR/XR applications.
  • Strong understanding of 3D graphics, GPU programming, multithreading, networking, and performance optimization.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience streaming high-bandwidth low-latency realtime data at scale, such as realtime camera video, LiDAR, depth sensors, occupancy maps, or other realtime data.
  • Experience developing VR or mixed reality applications using OpenXR, Unreal Engine, Unity, or similar platforms.
  • Experience building visualization systems for robotics, autonomous vehicles, simulation, VR, or digital twins.
  • Experience developing low-latency highly responsive consumer apps.

What does a successful 1X Team Member look like:
Team members at 1X who thrive here are builders. They move fast, own their work completely, and treat time like it's the one thing you can't get back - because it is. They say what they mean, finish what they start, and hold themselves to a standard before anyone has to ask. We push each other to be better, and we do it with honesty and respect.
Compensation Range
$175,000 - $215,000+ Equity (final level dependent on experience)
Benefits
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave
  • 401(k) plan with company match (100% on the first 3% of contributions, 50% on the next 2%)
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) options
  • Commuter benefits (transit and parking)
  • Short-term and long-term disability, and life insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for mental health, financial, and personal support
  • Onsite snacks and catered lunches
