How does a union instructional designer typically collaborate with union representatives and subject matter experts during the course development process?

Union Instructional Designers work closely with both union representatives and subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure that training materials are relevant, accurate, and aligned with union values and objectives. This often involves regular meetings to gather input on curriculum content, clarify industry-specific requirements, and incorporate feedback from union leadership. Designers may also facilitate workshops or focus groups to ensure that diverse member perspectives are included. Collaboration is key to developing effective, engaging learning experiences that support both professional development and union goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union instructional designer, and why are they important?

Union Instructional Designers need expertise in instructional design theory, curriculum development, and adult learning principles, typically supported by a degree in education or instructional design. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and sometimes certifications like CPLP or ATD are common requirements. Excellent communication, collaboration, and project management skills enable effective partnership with union stakeholders and subject matter experts. These combined skills ensure training materials are engaging, effective, and tailored to the unique needs of union members.
