What is an underwriting assistant?

An underwriting assistant, or underwriting service assistant, helps a lead underwriter to process applications for mortgages, credit, or insurance. Whether you work in the banking or insurance industry, your primary responsibility is to support your company’s underwriters. This includes obtaining relevant documents and client information so that the underwriter can assess their eligibility, and maintaining accurate records on all applicants and approval processes. Since you often work directly under a single underwriter, specific duties vary depending on your supervisors working style. You need an associate degree in finance or economics for a career as an underwriting assistant, but most employers prefer candidates to hold a bachelor’s degree. Organizational and administrative skills are crucial for this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an underwriting assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Underwriting Assistant, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of insurance principles, usually supported by a high school diploma or some college coursework. Familiarity with underwriting software, document management systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Office are commonly required. Excellent communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills help you effectively support underwriters and coordinate with clients or brokers. These capabilities are vital for ensuring accurate, efficient processing of insurance applications and contributing to the overall success of the underwriting team.

What are some typical challenges an underwriting assistant might face when supporting multiple underwriters, and how can they manage these effectively?

Underwriting Assistants often juggle supporting several underwriters simultaneously, which can present challenges in prioritizing tasks and managing tight deadlines. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to stay on top of document processing, application reviews, and data entry. Leveraging technology, such as workflow management systems, and proactively clarifying priorities with underwriters can help maintain accuracy and efficiency. Building a collaborative relationship with both underwriters and other support staff also ensures smoother workflow and reduces bottlenecks.

How much do underwriting assistants earn?

Underwriting assistants typically earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the employer. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced assistants or those with specialized skills can earn higher salaries. Compensation often includes benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans.

Is an underwriting assistant a good job?

An underwriting assistant plays a key role in insurance companies by supporting underwriters with data analysis, document review, and policy processing. The job typically requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and familiarity with insurance software. It can offer stable employment and opportunities for career advancement in the insurance industry.

Is underwriting a tough job?

Underwriting is a detail-oriented role that involves assessing risks and making decisions based on financial and personal information. Description
Our Underwriting Assistants are a critical part of CFC's underwriting operation, providing expert support to underwriters and helping ensure we continue to deliver outstanding service to brokers and insureds worldwide.
As an Underwriting Assistant in our Corporate Professions team, you'll play a key role in supporting the end-to-end underwriting process, acting as a trusted partner to the underwriting team and helping drive efficiency, accuracy and consistency across the portfolio.
We're ideally looking for someone who already has a few years of experience supporting Corporate Professions underwriters and is looking to continue building their career as a UA within a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment.
About the role
You'll provide day-to-day operational and administrative support to underwriting teams, ensuring submissions, renewals and policy documentation are processed accurately and efficiently.
Key responsibilities will include:
  • Supporting underwriters throughout the full underwriting lifecycle, from submission through to policy issuance.
  • Managing and prioritising new business and renewal submissions.
  • Ensuring underwriting systems and records are maintained accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Preparing underwriting documentation, policy schedules and related correspondence.
  • Liaising with brokers and internal stakeholders to resolve queries and obtain outstanding information.
  • Monitoring pipelines, renewal activity and subjectivities, ensuring key deadlines are met.
  • Producing reports and management information as required.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processes and ways of working across the team.
  • Acting as a knowledgeable point of contact for underwriting operations and administration.

About you
You'll be an organised, proactive and detail-oriented professional who enjoys working in a busy environment and building strong relationships with stakeholders.
We're particularly interested in candidates who have:
  • Demonstrable experience working as an Underwriting Assistant within the insurance market supporting Corporate Professions underwriting teams.
  • A strong understanding of underwriting processes, policy administration and broker servicing.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
  • Confidence communicating with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good system skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and experience navigating underwriting platforms.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to support colleagues across the wider team.
  • Progress towards, or an interest in pursuing, professional insurance qualifications such as the CII.
