What is a temp attorney?

Temp attorneys, also known as temporary or contract attorneys, are legal professionals hired for a limited period to assist with specific projects or to manage increased workloads. They often work on tasks such as document review, legal research, or supporting litigation teams during peak times. Temp attorneys may be employed directly by law firms, corporations, or through staffing agencies, and their assignments can range from a few days to several months. This role offers flexibility for attorneys and allows employers to efficiently manage fluctuating legal demands.

What are some common challenges temp attorneys face when joining new legal teams on short notice?

Temp Attorneys often encounter the challenge of quickly acclimating to new workplace cultures and workflows. They must rapidly understand ongoing cases, familiarize themselves with firm protocols, and build rapport with permanent staff, all while meeting tight deadlines. Success in this role requires adaptability, excellent communication, and strong organizational skills. Many temp roles offer a dynamic environment with opportunities to gain diverse legal experience and expand professional networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor degree, active bar membership, and strong legal research and writing skills. Familiarity with document review platforms (like Relativity or Concordance), e-discovery tools, and case management systems is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for success in temporary legal assignments. These skills and qualifications ensure high-quality legal work, efficient project completion, and the ability to seamlessly integrate with new teams and processes.

Since its establishment in 2016, the Institute has filed precedent-setting litigation, undertaken major interdisciplinary research initiatives, and become an influential voice in debates about the freedoms of speech and the press in the digital age. Its active litigation docket includes cutting-edge cases relating to transparency, surveillance, and social media. Through its research program, the Institute has published a series of influential essays focused on emerging threats to the system of free expression. It has also hosted public events on new technology and public discourse, data journalism and the law, the First Amendment and inequality, whistleblowers, leaks, and national-security journalism.
The Institute is seeking to hire a Staff Attorney for a two-year position based at Columbia University in New York City. A key member of the Institute's litigation team, the Staff Attorney will contribute to the Institute's litigation program by conceiving of and developing new cases, researching legal and factual questions, drafting research memos, working with clients and witnesses, drafting and editing legal briefs, and presenting oral argument. The Staff Attorney must have litigation experience, preferably in cases seeking to vindicate civil rights or civil liberties. The Staff Attorney must also have the judgment, energy, initiative, creativity, flexibility, and passion required to work effectively both individually and as part of a team.

  • Help set the Institute's strategic direction, determine the Institute's substantive priorities, and design and implement the Institute's research and public education programs.
  • Contribute to the Institute's research program as appropriate through participation in discussions about potential research initiatives, research, and writing.
  • Speak on behalf of the Institute to professional and academic audiences; write in a variety of formats (including in blog posts, op-eds, and white papers) for both legal and non-legal audiences about issues relating to the Institute's work; and represent the Institute in the media.
  • Supervise legal fellows and interns.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with the Institute's partners inside and outside the Columbia University community.
  • Travel as required for litigation, conferences, and speaking engagements.
