Job description

The Technical writer is responsible for creating and updating instructions and playbooks based on the release of new application versions used globally in manufacturing plants that build the next generation of transportation.
The technical writer will work hands-on to build full-stack application environments based on detailed requirements and system specifications. Responsibilities will include gathering high-level requirements from manufacturing plants; documenting step-by-step software installation and application configuration procedures tailored to each plant's needs; and testing and troubleshooting issues related to new code or plant configurations.
This role requires a strong development background to support process and test automation. The individual will also identify opportunities to apply AI and implement AI-based solutions.
Additionally, this role will contribute to security lifecycle maintenance by ensuring that all third-party applications and operating systems comply with IT Statement of Technical Direction. The Deploy Software Developer will work closely with development and support teams to help maintain 100% uptime, reliability, and security.

Responsibilities Include

  • Work closely with IT infrastructure delivery teams to install and configure virtual servers in plant data centers with minimum supervision
  • Work closely with IT Project Management to ensure launch and deployment activities are tracking for on-time delivery and, escalating any risks as necessary with minimum supervision
  • Identify repeatable deployment actions for automation via scripting or CI/CD pipelines
  • Work closely with in-plant resources to validate application functionality with physical systems
  • Provide analysis and site-specific business configuration required to meet launch and deployment initiatives
  • Coordinate testing with upstream and downstream plant software applications to validate data continuity
  • Investigate IT system integration problems and provide technical input in problem resolution
  • Have knowledge of software monitoring tools for uptime and performance
  • Have knowledge or experience in software development
  • Maintain technical documentation to reflect accurate and current production installations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Learn new technical concepts and practices quickly and apply them across multiple types of applications and software
  • Must possess a high degree of business insight, creativity, decision making skills, a drive for results, the ability to negotiate, the ability to develop strong peer relationships, and a strong technical learning capability and focus

  • Possess technical depth and applied experience in multi-layer solutioning, performance tuning, solution debug, incident triage/remediation, and usability improvement.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience
    • Experience in leading technology teams with strategic and tactical responsibilities
    • Experience with Agile teams that have regularly delivered software while practicing code review
    • Knowledge in end-to-end applications hosted on Kubernetes with a focus on scalability, high availability, and fault tolerance
    • Proven experience diagnosing issues from browser to infrastructure to network to database and all the way back
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate and translate feedback, needs and solutions
    • Creative problem-solving skills that deliver elegant solutions to complex issues
    • Strong teamwork focus and the ability to foster collaboration within and across teams
    • This role will require you to travel to physical plant locations for workshop or deployment activities
    • This role may require you to work during manufacturing plant downtime (weekends, second shift, third shift, holidays).
    • Manufacturing experience
    • Databases: Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL, or other databases
    • Web Application Servers: WebSphere, WebLogic, TomCat, IIS
    • Infrastructure: Server Provisioning, Virtual Machines, Networking, Cluster servers
    • OS: Linux, UNIX, Windows Server, Cloud technology

    • Strong .net C#
    • Strong Python or PowerShell Scripting
    • Experience in IT Enterprise Security concepts and implementation
    • Kepware: configuring IoT Gateway to allow a PLC to talk to an upper level application through Kepware, importing tags, automatic tag generation

Preferred Skill Set/Experience:

  • 3+ years' experience integrating applications with industrial PLC or robot (or other automation equipment) in a manufacturing environment
  • 3+ years' performing test automation
  • React UI development experience
