What is the difference between Permanent Engineering Technical Writer vs Contract Engineering Technical Writer?

AspectPermanent Engineering Technical WriterContract Engineering Technical Writer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, technical communication, or related field; certifications like Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC)Similar credentials as permanent roles; often requires proven technical writing experience and relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentFull-time, in-house or remote, with ongoing projects and team collaborationTemporary or project-based, often remote, with variable project durations
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by manufacturing, aerospace, software, and engineering firms for long-term documentation needsCommon in consulting firms, agencies, or companies needing short-term technical documentation support

Both roles require strong technical writing skills and engineering knowledge, but permanent engineering technical writers typically work full-time within a company, focusing on long-term documentation, while contract writers are hired for specific projects or periods, offering flexibility and specialized expertise.

What are the 3 C's of technical writing?

The 3 C's of technical writing are clarity, conciseness, and correctness. These principles help engineering technical writers produce clear, efficient, and accurate documentation that effectively communicates complex technical information to diverse audiences.

Are technical writers still in demand?

Technical writers, including those in engineering fields, continue to be in demand due to the need for clear documentation of complex technical information. They often work in industries such as manufacturing, software, and engineering, utilizing tools like XML and Adobe FrameMaker, with demand driven by technological advancements and regulatory requirements.

Is AI taking over technical writing?

AI is increasingly used in technical writing to assist with tasks like content generation, editing, and data analysis, but it does not replace the need for skilled technical writers. Technical writers, including those in engineering, focus on creating clear, accurate documentation that often requires human expertise, critical thinking, and domain knowledge. AI tools serve as aids to improve efficiency but still rely on human oversight and specialized skills.

What does an engineering technical writer do?

An engineering technical writer creates clear, detailed documentation such as manuals, guides, and technical reports for engineering products and processes. They work closely with engineers to understand complex concepts and often use tools like Adobe FrameMaker or MadCap Flare to produce accurate, user-friendly materials, typically working in a structured environment with technical writing standards.
