About the role:

The Technical Manager is responsible for providing technical leadership, project management, client support, method development, analytical data interpretation, and regulatory compliance within the environmental laboratory. This role supports laboratory operations by ensuring high-quality analytical performance, maintaining instrumentation, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

About you:

  • Maintain and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation including IC, ICP-MS, GC, GC/MS, purge and trap systems, High Resolution Mass Spectrometers (HRMS), and related environmental testing equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibrations, and repairs while coordinating vendor service support when required.
  • Possess strong knowledge of environmental analytical methodologies including EPA and ASTM methods.
  • Support environmental testing operations involving soil, groundwater, wastewater, and environmental compliance analyses.
  • Take an active role in training and mentoring laboratory analysts on technical methodologies, quality systems, and instrument troubleshooting.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for instrumentation and consumable vendors including Agilent, Tekmar, and other environmental laboratory suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with vendors, regulatory agencies, technical representatives, and industry peers.
  • Collaborate with clients and technical sales teams regarding analytical methods, environmental projects, and data interpretation.
  • Participate in technical conferences, regulatory meetings, and industry committees as appropriate.
  • Utilize purchasing and requisition systems to order laboratory parts, supplies, and consumables.
  • Maintain familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Perform peer review and technical validation of analytical data.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, instrumentation, and process improvements to enhance laboratory efficiency and quality.
  • Experience with Wet Chemistry analysis, Metals analysis, VOC analysis, SVOC analysis, and Dioxin & PCB Congener testing is highly preferred.
  • Experience operating, troubleshooting, and supporting High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) systems is required.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and laboratory software systems.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Adapt effectively to changes in organizational priorities, technologies, and laboratory systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field is required.
  • HRMS (High Resolution Mass Spectrometry) experience is required.
  • 10+ years of technical experience is preferred.
  • 5+ years of laboratory experience is preferred.
  • Strong experience with EPA methods for soil and water analysis is highly desired.
  • Experience with Wet Chemistry, Metals, VOC, SVOC, and Dioxin & PCB Congener analysis is strongly preferred.
  • Management experience would be an asset.

Physical Demands:

  • The ability to speak and hear clearly while communicating with staff, management, and clients.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for 100% of an 8-hour day.
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computer, syringes, and other equipment.
