GPLA, part of the DPR Family of Companies, is a leading firm in the field of structural engineering, dedicated to delivering innovative and efficient solutions for a wide range of construction projects. We are seeking a talentedSenior Structural Technical Managerto join our dynamic team.

This is a vital role within our team, responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of engineering projects. As an expert in the field, you will lead and guide the engineering team, ensuring the highest standards of design, analysis, and compliance with industry regulations. You willestablishand implement engineering procedures, drive technological advancements, and provide technicalexpertiseto resolve complex issues. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you willoptimizeengineering processes, promote innovation, and enhance project efficiency.

The ideal candidate has a strong technical background, extensive industry knowledge, and excellent leadership skills to inspire and mentor the engineering team. Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to the following:

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Mentor and manageStructural Designers I, Structural Designers II, Structural Design Engineers, Structural Project Engineers, Project Managers, and Technical Managers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assistin the management and production of drawings, specifications, and calculations during a project's design phase life cycle from conceptual design to completion of construction documents under reduced supervision and coordination with the Project Manager.

  • Assistin review of deliverables to ensure the scope and quality standards are met throughout project's life cycle.

  • Establish and enforce quality control measures to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of engineering deliverables, including technical calculations, drawings, and specifications.

  • Assistin the management and completion of various construction administration tasks, such as, reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to RFIs, and making site visits, under reduced supervision and coordination with theProject Manager.

  • In coordination with project manager, oversee andbe responsible forthe development of structural designs and analytical models for various building types and materials.

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), offering technical support, resolving complex engineering issues, and providing guidance on innovative solutions and emerging technologies.

  • Perform and/or review calculations and analyses and develop and implement company engineering procedures and best practices to ensure structural integrity and compliance with building codes and regulations. Working knowledge of all relevant codes.

  • Utilize CAD software, including Tekla Structures, and other tools to create 2D drawings and 3D models.

  • Collaborate with and help manage team members, including engineers,modelersand detailers, to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality design solutions within budget. This may involve assigning tasks,monitoringprogress, and ensuring effective collaboration and communication among team members toaccomplisha designated scope.

  • Participate in and help manage project design meetings to achieve projectobjectives. Some responsibilities may include setting agendas,takingnotes, and providing meeting minutes.

  • Stay updated with industry trends, code updates, and advancements in structural design techniques and technologies by activelyparticipatingin professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge in structural engineering and project management.

  • Identifyopportunities for process improvement, cost optimization, and efficiency enhancement, and lead initiatives to drive continuous improvement within the company, especially as it relates to technicalexpertiseand process. Examples include:

  • Participation (code committee participation) in respective SME professional society (ASCE, ACI, AISC, SEAONC, etc.).

  • Thought Leadership: Writing blog posts on code updates etc.

  • Develop and teach training modules to the team

  • Develop andmaintainSME section on GPLA Portal

  • Assist Project Manager to monitor project costs, track expenses and manage the project budget.

  • Assist PM to identify and pursue change orders as appropriate due to the modifications to the project's scope, budget or schedule.

  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities to team members, promoting their growth and technicalproficiency.

  • Ability to travel to perform site visits at various project locations around the country as needed.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of structural engineering principles, codes, and standards.

  • Familiarity with structural design and analysis, materials, and construction techniques for making informed decisions and ensuring compliance with regulations.

  • The ability to act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the companyin a givenarea of knowledge.

  • The ability toidentifyand analyze problems, propose solutions, and make informed decisions whichincludescritical thinking skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during the construction process.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and communication with internal and external project stakeholders, including clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and regulatory bodies.

  • The ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and concise manner and manage stakeholder expectations.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and help manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines and ensuretimelyproject completion.

  • A keen eye for detail to ensure accuracy and quality in creating and reviewing design plans, specifications, and construction documentation which also helps inidentifyingpotential risks or discrepancies in the project.

  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse stakeholders; which includes active listening, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.

  • The ability to adapt quickly, make informed decisions, and adjust project plans to face unexpected challenges and changes.

  • Proficiencyin relevant software and tools used in structural engineering and project management, such as computer-aided design (CAD) software.

  • Acommitmentto stay updated with industry trends,new technologies, and regulatory changes.

  • The ability to help aProject Managercreate comprehensive project plans,allocateresources, manage budgets, and ensuretimelycompletion.

  • Basic knowledge of financial and budget management principlesisbeneficial which includes the ability to track project costs,monitorbudgets, and contribute to cost-effective decision-making.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree from an ABET accredited programrequired. Master of Science preferred.

  • PE Licenserequired. SE License preferred. Setup andmaintainan NCEES record for licensure.

  • Twelve years of experience working in the building structural engineering field.
