Job description

Senior Communications Manager
Location: Dallas, TX / Morristown, NJ / Austin, TX / San Francisco Bay Area, CA
Reporting to: Sr. Director of Communications, Content & Brand
About Hippo
Hippo was built on a promise: make homeownership effortless. Nearly a decade later, that mission still drives us. We use technology and data to help our customers stay ahead of problems and protect what matters most.
Today, that same tech-native approach powers our work beyond homeowners. Hippo operates as a diversified carrier platform, partnering with MGAs to deliver tailored program solutions that help them grow and deliver better customer experiences. Behind that work is a team that values ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
If you're energized by building what's next, we'd love to meet you.
About The Role:
Hippo is hiring a Senior Communications Manager to lead press and media strategy across corporate storytelling. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Communications, you'll serve as a strategic partner in amplifying Hippo's narrative across investors, partners, media, and the broader insurance ecosystem translating complex business results, product capabilities, and market dynamics into stories that build trust and market authority.
This is a high-visibility, cross-functional role at a publicly traded company sitting at the intersection of insurance and technology. You'll bring judgment and initiative to a fast-moving, high-growth team, and build a sustainable system for driving ongoing storytelling across executive communications, earnings, and dedicated consumer-facing campaigns.
About You:
You're a skilled storyteller who can turn technical, regulated-industry topics into narratives that resonate, moving fluidly between corporate and consumer storytelling while always building toward the bigger brand picture. You nurture priority media relationships over time rather than relying on one-off outreach, and you're a trusted advisor to senior executives - coaching spokespeople, exercising sound judgment on when and how leaders should show up publicly, and navigating crisis and reputation management with confidence.
You take initiative and thrive in ambiguity within a lean, high-ownership environment, and you're just as comfortable partnering with Legal, external agencies, and Finance/IR as you are mining story ideas directly with leadership.
What You'll Do:
  • Manage Hippo's press and media strategy end-to-end including narrative development, press release writing, and relationship management with priority trade and business media.
  • Partner with Finance and Investor Relations on quarterly earnings communications, turning results into media-ready storytelling and proactive pitch angles.
  • Lead executive communications prepping spokespeople for high-stakes interviews, build a bench of secondary spokespeople, and triage which speaking opportunities are worth executive involvement.
  • Drive thought leadership for the executive team, identifying and placing commentary, bylines, and speaking opportunities that build industry authority.
  • Shape and execute consumer communications that highlight Hippo's role in protecting homeowners, including education content and campaign storytelling.
  • Manage Hippo's PR agency relationship, coordinating execution and shared media relationships.
  • Serve as a direct, high-trust partner to the executive team proactively surfacing issues and ideas that can turn into valuable storytelling opportunities.

Must Haves:
  • 8+ years of corporate communications, PR, or media relations experience, spanning in-house and agency.
  • Proven track record owning press release development, editorial calendars and media relationships end-to-end.
  • Strong experience with PR agency management, driving media relations activities for the highest possible outcomes.
  • Experience with Finance or Investor Relations on public company earnings or other related financial communications.
  • Experience preparing executives for high-visibility media and speaking engagements.
  • Strong judgment operating with ambiguity and limited day-to-day direction from senior leaders.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to promote executive leader voices across channels.
  • Experience working with insurance or financial services brands strongly preferred.

Benefits and Perks
Hippo treats its team members with the same level of dedication and care as we do our customers, which is why we're fortunate to provide all of our Hippos with:
  • Healthy Hippos Benefits - Multiple medical plans to choose from and 100% employer covered dental & vision plans for our team members and their families. We also offer a 401(k)-retirement plan, short & long-term disability, employer-paid life insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for health and dependent care, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Equity - This position is eligible for equity compensation.
  • Training and Career Growth - Training and internal career growth opportunities.
  • Flexible Time Off - You know when and how you should recharge.
  • Little Hippos Program - We offer 12 weeks of parental leave for primary and secondary caregivers.
  • Hippo Habitat - Snacks and drinks available and catered lunches for onsite employees.

The Morristown, NJ and San Jose, CA base pay range for this role is $150,000 - $200,000. Exact compensation may vary based on several job-related factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to: skill set, experience, education/training, location, business needs and market demands.
Hippo is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to building a team culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion. Hippo's applicants are considered solely based on their qualifications, without regard to an applicant's disability or need for accommodation. Any Hippo applicant who requires reasonable accommodations during the application process should contact the Hippo's People Team to make the need for an accommodation known.
