Job/Department Summary:

The Senior Director of IT Infrastructure, Cloud, & Platform Services provides strategic leadership, vision, and operational oversight for the University's hybrid IT ecosystem, including cloud platforms, on-premises infrastructure, network services, data center, research computing, and enterprise hosting environments.

This role is responsible for transforming traditional infrastructure services into scalable, secure, and resilient platform-based services that enable teaching, learning, research, and administrative excellence. The Senior Director leads the evolution of the University's technology landscape toward cloud-first, automation-driven, and AI-enabled capabilities, while ensuring high availability, performance, and security of mission-critical systems.

The position plays a key leadership role in:

  • Advancing digital transformation initiatives
  • Supporting data-intensive research and high-performance computing needs
  • Enabling modern application development and integration environments
  • Partnering on cybersecurity, data governance, and compliance strategies
  • Delivering reliable, customer-centered infrastructure services

As a member of the IT leadership team, this position partners across the University to enable digital transformation, data-intensive research, and emerging technologies.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 7-10+ years of progressive IT leadership experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading:
    • Cloud adoption or infrastructure transformation
    • Enterprise infrastructure or platform services teams
  • Experience in higher education or research environments strongly preferred
  • Experience developing and operationalizing Disaster Recovery (DR) Plans and Business Impact Analysis (BIA)

Preferences:

Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills: 

  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise cloud transformation initiatives, including migration from legacy infrastructure to hybrid or cloud-based environments.
  • Experience implementing automation, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or platform engineering practices.
  • Experience supporting research computing, high-performance computing (HPC), AI/ML infrastructure, or data-intensive computing environments.
  • Experience managing cloud financial operations, technology lifecycle planning, or consumption-based technology budgeting models.
  • Demonstrated success leading organizational transformation, including modernization of technical teams, processes, and service delivery models.
  • Experience building collaborative partnerships across infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise applications, and customer support organizations.
  • Experience supporting complex higher education or similarly decentralized organizations with diverse stakeholder needs.

Time Base: Full-time

Pay Plan: 12/12

Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00am-5:00pm, Summer: Mon-Thurs 7:00am-5:30pm 

Anticipated Hiring Range:  Anticipated up to $176,412 per year.  Salary commensurate with education and experience of the individual selected.

This position is considered a sensitive position based on CSU guidelines. Incumbent is responsible for the safety and security of Level 1 data, sometimes also referred to as Level 1 protected data. The person holding this position is considered a "Limited Mandated Reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 (revised July 21, 2017) as a condition of employment.

This position is a Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA) designated managerial position and comes under the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University.  Individuals appointed to management positions serve at the pleasure of the President or designee.  They are excluded from the collective bargaining process, are not subject to probationary service, and do not receive tenure or permanent status.  This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a "designated position" under the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.  (Group/Category: Computing and Communications Services - Director (all levels) - CAT02)
