Department Bio
The Open Source Program Office (OSPO) coordinates and supports open-source software across the university, helping researchers and educators embrace open-source tools and practices. It aims to create a culture of open collaboration and knowledge sharing aligned with GW's research and educational mission.
We promote open-source software development, open data, and open access in research and education. We support our community in adopting open practices to grow our impact on a local and global scale.
The OSPO also provides consultations, training, tools, and resources in support of open-source software, open science, and open education.
Position Specific Summary
This student will be responsible for various aspects of the OSPO's programming and project support, including:
- Scheduling, booking, planning, and organizing various OSPO events & initiatives such as workshops, student award programs, surveys, hackathons, lunch & learn series, stakeholder meetings, etc.
- Managing the GW OSPO Github repositories including maintaining projects, ensuring versions are synched, and addressing issues and pull requests
- Leading the development and deployment of key OSPO projects such as survey visualizations, project discovery tools, tutorial templates, and more
- Supporting students working on open source projects
- Contributing to open source educational initiatives (CURIOSS patterns, tutorials, tabling, consultations, workshops, hackathons, etc.)
Occasional research projects and special departmental tasks may be assigned as needed.
This position is only open to graduate students.
Standard Position Description
The student will assist in the management and leading of special projects. Tasks may include: leading and organizing mid to large scale projects, designing project timelines and goals, performing research, coordinating with stakeholders and the project team, reporting updates and outcomes with project leaders, building and organizing leadership development programs for students, managing student staff. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.

Required Qualifications
Previous skills, training, or experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of git, Markdown, and coding standards
- Experience with Python, R, or other programming languages
- Tutoring or teaching experience, experience teaching code highly desired
- Comfort with public speaking, outreach, and interacting with new people
- Experience maintaining or contributing to open source software
