Job description

Library Assistant II

The job of Library Assistant II is done for the purpose of providing supplemental assistance to the students and other users of the library resources; assisting the librarian with daily operations of the library sites; identifying age appropriate resources for students and teachers utilizing on-line and library resources; and serving as a resource to distribute, explain and/or operate library media equipment.

Essential functions include assisting teachers, students, and/or administrators with identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments; assisting the librarian in the operation of the library; assisting in training and supervising student assistants; evaluating books and/or periodicals for retention within collection; inventorying equipment and materials; maintaining materials inventory; monitoring student activities; ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment; preparing reports; preparing media equipment for use; processing library books, periodicals, software, and related media materials; performing acquisitions functions; providing guidance to students; repairing books and materials; and responding to inquiries of students, staff, and/or parents.

Other functions include attending meetings as assigned and performing related duties consistent with the scope of the position.

Reporting relationships include reporting to the school librarian and being evaluated by the school principal or his/her designee.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include performing multiple, non-technical tasks; operating standard office equipment; reading technical information; writing routine correspondence; solving practical problems; scheduling activities, meetings, and/or events; working with others; problem solving with data; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget.

The working environment requires occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and some fine finger dexterity. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Typical qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, completion of general computer courses, at least two years of work experience in a library setting, and a valid state of Washington driver's license. A criminal justice fingerprint background clearance is also required.
