What is the difference between Structural Designer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural DesignerStructural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, often with certification or licensing depending on regionRequires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and licensure (e.g., PE license)
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, often working with CAD software, collaborating with engineers and architectsDesign and analysis, overseeing structural integrity, and ensuring code compliance
Industry UsageCommon in architectural firms, design consultancies, and construction planningFound in engineering firms, consulting agencies, and construction companies

While both roles involve structural design, Structural Designers focus more on creating detailed drawings and plans, whereas Structural Engineers perform analysis, calculations, and ensure safety standards are met. The roles often overlap, but engineers typically hold licensure and have broader responsibilities in structural safety and compliance.

What are some common challenges structural designers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural designers often collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) professionals. A common challenge is coordinating design changes and ensuring that structural solutions align with evolving architectural concepts and system requirements. Effective communication and proficiency with design software are essential for integrating feedback and maintaining project timelines. Adapting to tight deadlines and balancing multiple priorities are also typical aspects of the role, especially when working on large or complex projects.

What is a structural designer?

Structural designers are professionals who create the plans and specifications for buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and capable of withstanding various forces. They work closely with architects and engineers to design the framework and select appropriate materials for construction projects. Structural designers use specialized software and their knowledge of engineering principles to analyze loads, stresses, and potential weaknesses, ensuring the integrity of the final structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural designer?

To thrive as a Structural Designer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, proficiency in drafting, and typically a relevant degree or diploma. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, as well as knowledge of building codes, is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and code-compliant designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

Job Description

The Structural Designer will create detailed structural designs and drawing packages that meet all applicable codes, regulatory standards, and contractual requirements. This role converts design requirements and sketches into accurate 3D configurations, performs supporting calculations, and collaborates closely with engineers and production staff to ensure designs align with project goals. The Structural Designer will support multiple concurrent projects, maintain a strong focus on safety and structural integrity, and provide clear communication to leadership and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare comprehensive structural drawing packages that comply with relevant codes, regulatory standards, and contractual specifications.
  • Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols in all design work to help prevent electrical hazards and other risks.
  • Translate design requirements into precise 3D configurations using industrial design tools and perform calculations from sketches for proposals.
  • Coordinate the implementation of design criteria and ensure consistency and accuracy across all drawings and models.
  • Participate in planning meetings to understand project scope, adapt designs to evolving project needs, and help ensure efficient use of company resources.
  • Ensure designs meet project deadlines while remaining compliant with local regulations and contractual obligations.
  • Communicate design progress, issues, and milestones to leadership and stakeholders through clear reporting and presentations.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and production staff to interpret design concepts and ensure alignment with project goals and constructability requirements.
  • Review all relevant documentation, including company procedural manuals and customer specifications, to identify critical design attributes and constraints.
  • Perform detailed structural calculations to support product design, verify structural integrity, and validate design assumptions.
  • Analyze vendor quotes, drawings, and diagrams to develop accurate structural layouts that meet customer requirements.
  • Revise designs and drawings based on change orders, customer requests, or issues identified during construction or review.
  • Manage a workload of approximately 8–9 projects at a time, following priorities set by project engineers and maintaining focus on key tasks.
  • Work in close partnership with an assigned engineer on each project to provide updates and coordinate communication with clients and production staff.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience using Inventor for 3D design.
  • At least 2 years of experience using AutoCAD for 3D design.
  • At least 2 years of experience in structural design of buildings, which may include commercial, residential, e-houses, enclosures, or similar structures.
  • Proficiency in structural steel design and detailing.
  • Hands-on experience with drafting and CAD-based structural design workflows.
  • Ability to perform structural calculations to support design decisions and ensure structural integrity.
  • Ability to interpret and apply codes, regulatory standards, and customer specifications to structural designs.
  • Strong attention to detail when preparing and revising drawings and structural layouts.
  • Effective communication skills to report progress and collaborate with engineers and production staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience designing steel structures, enclosures, and fabricated components.
  • Experience reviewing vendor drawings, diagrams, and quotes to integrate components into structural layouts.
