What is the difference between Structural Designer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural DesignerStructural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, often with certification or licensing depending on regionRequires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and licensure (e.g., PE license)
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, often working with CAD software, collaborating with engineers and architectsDesign and analysis, overseeing structural integrity, and ensuring code compliance
Industry UsageCommon in architectural firms, design consultancies, and construction planningFound in engineering firms, consulting agencies, and construction companies

While both roles involve structural design, Structural Designers focus more on creating detailed drawings and plans, whereas Structural Engineers perform analysis, calculations, and ensure safety standards are met. The roles often overlap, but engineers typically hold licensure and have broader responsibilities in structural safety and compliance.

What are some common challenges structural designers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural designers often collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) professionals. A common challenge is coordinating design changes and ensuring that structural solutions align with evolving architectural concepts and system requirements. Effective communication and proficiency with design software are essential for integrating feedback and maintaining project timelines. Adapting to tight deadlines and balancing multiple priorities are also typical aspects of the role, especially when working on large or complex projects.

What is a structural designer?

Structural designers are professionals who create the plans and specifications for buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and capable of withstanding various forces. They work closely with architects and engineers to design the framework and select appropriate materials for construction projects. Structural designers use specialized software and their knowledge of engineering principles to analyze loads, stresses, and potential weaknesses, ensuring the integrity of the final structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural designer?

To thrive as a Structural Designer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, proficiency in drafting, and typically a relevant degree or diploma. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, as well as knowledge of building codes, is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and code-compliant designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

Job description

Job Title: Structural Designer (BIM & Engineering Solutions)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and self-directed Structural Designer to take greater ownership of structural designs and project deliverables across a variety of building and infrastructure initiatives. In this role, you will work independently on smaller projects-collaborating directly with engineers to identify project goals, perform code research, and coordinate with internal and external trades-while functioning as a lead system designer on larger, multi-phase developments.
This is a key technical position requiring deep subject matter expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to quality. You will create and publish comprehensive drawings, models, and details, review the work of junior staff, and ensure all deliverables align with project schedules and industry best practices. If you have a strong background in structural drafting, modeling, and multidisciplinary coordination, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Deliverable Development
• Technical Execution: Plan and conduct work requiring judgment and creativity in the layout, modeling, and detailed design of structural systems across all project phases.
• Deliverable Production: Prepare comprehensive documentation including 3D models, framing plans, elevations, sections, schedules, and construction details for meetings, proposals, and contract documents.
• Engineering Support: Assist project engineers with calculations, specification reviews, and the evaluation of alternative technical solutions.
Coordination & Quality Control
• Multi-Disciplinary Coordination: Resolve spatial conflicts between structural systems, other engineering disciplines, and existing field conditions using advanced review tools.
• Peer Review: Back-check your own work and review the deliverables of junior designers and early-career engineers for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to codes.
• Field Surveys: Conduct site visits and field surveys of existing structural conditions as required to support design accuracy.
Project Ownership & Leadership
• Scope & Scheduling: Monitor work progress against project scope, schedule, and budget, identifying scope creep early and elevating concerns to leadership.
• Submittal Management: Review and process submittal documents, respond to requests for information (RFIs), and participate in design status meetings.
• Junior Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff while fostering a collaborative, positive team environment.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience Baseline: Professional mid-to-senior level experience in structural design, drafting, and engineering coordination within an architecture/engineering environment.
• Software Mastery:
oExtensive 3D modeling and drafting experience utilizing Revit and AutoCAD.
oExtensive model review and clash detection experience utilizing Navisworks and Bluebeam.
• Technical Knowledge:
oThorough understanding of structural discipline requirements, industry best practices, and applicable building codes and standards.
oDemonstrated ability to analyze technical problems, weigh alternatives, and present effective solutions to design teams and clients.
• Core Competencies: Strong organizational skills; ability to estimate labor hours and break projects down into task requirements; excellent communication skills with the capability to act as an area or system lead designer.
Preferred Attributes
• Direct experience leading structural sub-teams or managing design packages for complex commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities.
• Proven track record of managing cross-discipline coordination in fast-paced design environments.
