What is a mechanical CAD designer?

Mechanical CAD Designers are professionals who use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed drawings and plans for mechanical devices, systems, and components. They collaborate with engineers and other team members to translate concepts and specifications into technical blueprints used for manufacturing and assembly. Their work is essential in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, helping to ensure designs are accurate, functional, and manufacturable.

What does a mechanical CAD designer do?

A mechanical CAD designer uses computer-aided design software for mechanical design projects. Your duties entail the use of specialized software to create drawings or 3D models for mechanical designs, iterating drafts based on feedback, optimizing file layouts for readability, and collaborating with team members throughout project development cycles. Your responsibilities also include communicating with clients and stakeholders to understand project needs and scope, and providing ongoing support after project completion or launch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical CAD designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical CAD Designer, you need strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, experience with drafting standards, and typically an associate's or bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, and familiarity with PLM systems or GD&T certification are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure accurate designs and smooth collaboration with engineering teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing precise technical drawings and supporting efficient product development cycles.

What are some common challenges mechanical CAD designers face when collaborating with engineers and manufacturers?

Mechanical CAD Designers often encounter challenges in ensuring that their designs accurately reflect engineers' specifications and can be feasibly manufactured. Effective communication is essential to clarify design intent, address feedback, and incorporate changes quickly. Additionally, designers must balance strict project timelines with the need for precision, often adapting to evolving technical requirements or last-minute adjustments. Building strong relationships with both engineering and manufacturing teams helps streamline this collaborative process and minimize misunderstandings.

What is the difference between Mechanical Cad Designer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMechanical Cad DesignerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD software environments, manufacturing settingsDesign, analysis, testing, and project management in engineering firms or industries
Job FocusCreating detailed CAD models and drawingsDesign, analysis, and overseeing mechanical systems

While both roles involve mechanical design, Mechanical Cad Designers focus on creating detailed CAD models and drawings, whereas Mechanical Engineers are responsible for designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems. The roles often overlap, but engineers typically have broader responsibilities including project management and system analysis.

Is there a demand for mechanical CAD designers?

Mechanical CAD designers are in steady demand across industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace, as companies require skilled professionals to develop detailed technical drawings and 3D models using tools like AutoCAD and SolidWorks. Employment opportunities are expected to grow with advancements in product development and engineering technology, especially for those with strong technical skills and certifications.

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

Plasma is seeking a skilled Mechanical CAD Designer to support the development and production of mechanical drawings for our Propulsion, Thermal Spray, and El Form product areas. This position will translate engineering concepts, specifications, and manufacturing requirements into accurate 2D drawings and 3D models.

The ideal candidate has practical experience designing mechanical components, assemblies, tooling, and fixtures in a manufacturing or aerospace environment. This individual will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations to produce designs that are technically accurate, manufacturable, inspection-ready, and compliant with applicable customer and industry requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support design and documentation requirements for Propulsion, Thermal Spray, and El Form products and processes.
  • Convert engineering concepts, sketches, specifications, and legacy drawings into complete CAD models and productionready drawings.
  • Prepare assembly drawings, detail drawings, bills of materials, layouts, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Apply appropriate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and company drafting standards.
  • Establish dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, coatings, and manufacturing notes in coordination with engineering and manufacturing personnel.
  • Perform tolerance reviews and basic tolerance stackup analyses.
  • Incorporate designformanufacturing and designforassembly principles into drawings and models.
  • Revise drawings and models through the company’s engineering change and configurationcontrol processes.
  • Maintain drawing accuracy, revision history, file organization, and traceability within the applicable documentcontrol or product lifecycle management system.
  • Review designs for completeness, manufacturability, fit, function, and compliance with established requirements.
  • Resolve drawing and design questions in collaboration with engineers, machinists, inspectors, technicians, and production personnel.
  • Support manufacturing and quality teams during fabrication, assembly, inspection, troubleshooting, and correctiveaction activities.
  • Assist with the review and improvement of drafting standards, CAD templates, drawing practices, and design workflows.
  • Participate in design reviews and clearly communicate drawing status, design concerns, and recommended changes.
  • Protect controlled technical information and comply with company exportcontrol, security, quality, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent education and experience in mechanical design, drafting, manufacturing technology, or a related field.
  • Approximately 37 years of professional mechanical CAD design or drafting experience.
  • Proficiency with a professional 3D mechanical CAD platform such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Creo, CATIA, or Siemens NX.
  • Demonstrated ability to create productionready mechanical drawings for machined, fabricated, formed, or assembled components.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and ASME Y14.5 drawing practices.
  • Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including fits, clearances, tolerances, fasteners, materials, and manufacturing processes.
