Are proofreaders still in demand?

Proofreaders, including senior proofreaders, continue to be in demand as companies and publishers seek accurate and polished content. The role often requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with editing tools, with opportunities available in publishing, media, and digital content sectors.

Is AI replacing proofreaders?

AI tools are increasingly used to assist proofreaders by identifying grammar, spelling, and style errors more efficiently. However, senior proofreaders still play a vital role in making nuanced editing decisions, ensuring tone consistency, and handling complex editing tasks that require human judgment. AI serves as a complement rather than a complete replacement in the proofreading process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Proofreader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Proofreader, you need exceptional attention to detail, advanced grammar and language skills, and several years of professional proofreading experience, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP, Chicago, or MLA), track-changes tools in Microsoft Word, and content management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure high-quality, error-free content that enhances brand credibility and meets publication standards.

What is the difference between Senior Proofreader vs Copy Editor?

AspectSenior ProofreaderCopy Editor
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in English, Journalism, or related field; proofreading certifications are commonOften requires similar credentials; editing certifications may be preferred
Work EnvironmentPublishing houses, media companies, freelance projectsPublishing, marketing agencies, corporate communications
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across publishing, journalism, and media industriesCommon in publishing, advertising, and content creation sectors
Primary FocusChecking for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errorsImproving clarity, style, structure, and overall content quality

While both roles require strong language skills and attention to detail, a Senior Proofreader primarily focuses on error correction, whereas a Copy Editor enhances content clarity and style. The roles often overlap but serve distinct purposes in the editing process.

How long does it take to proofread 50,000 words?

A senior proofreader typically reviews about 2,000 to 3,000 words per hour, so proofreading 50,000 words generally takes approximately 17 to 25 hours of focused work. Factors such as complexity of the text, required accuracy, and use of editing tools can influence the total time needed.

What are Senior Proofreaders?

Senior Proofreaders are experienced professionals responsible for reviewing written content to detect and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. They often oversee the work of other proofreaders, ensuring that all documents meet high standards of quality and consistency. In addition to error correction, Senior Proofreaders may also advise on style, clarity, and adherence to brand guidelines. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as publishing, advertising, and corporate communications. Typically, they have several years of proofreading experience and a strong command of language rules.

What are some common challenges Senior Proofreaders face when working with fast-paced publishing teams?

Senior Proofreaders often juggle tight deadlines and high volumes of content, especially when working within fast-paced publishing or marketing teams. Balancing accuracy with speed can be challenging, as they must ensure all documents are error-free while meeting strict turnaround times. Additionally, they frequently collaborate with writers, editors, and designers, requiring strong communication skills to clarify queries and maintain quality standards. Adapting to different style guides and managing last-minute changes are also typical aspects of the role.

What qualifications do you need to become a proofreader?

To become a senior proofreader, candidates typically need a strong command of language, excellent attention to detail, and proficiency in editing tools or style guides. A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field is often preferred, along with several years of proofreading experience in relevant industries.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Senior Visual Designer is a hybrid creative production and project coordination role purpose-built to support a dedicated creative & production model for a Fortune 50 client. This role leads the design and production of confidential projects, combining design execution skills with the operational discipline required to manage fast-moving client requests, coordinate workflow, communicate clearly with stakeholders, and deliver high-quality work under demanding timelines.
Senior Visual Designers serve as the primary point of contact with the client during their assigned coverage shift. They are responsible for day-to-day intake, prioritization, creative execution, project coordination, vendor communication, design duties, file preparation, and quality control. This position requires calm execution under pressure, strong client-service instincts, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to move seamlessly between design, production, and project management responsibilities.
Designers follow a 3-days-on / 3-days-off rotation, with alternating Sunday coverage shared between two teams. Depending on the week, this schedule typically provides 3 or 4 days off. Over the course of a year, designers on this schedule work approximately 78 fewer days than employees on a standard Monday-Friday schedule.
Because the studio operates every day of the year, weekend and holiday coverage may be required. Holiday assignments are balanced between the two teams, and holiday coverage compensation is reflected in the overall compensation package.
On assigned coverage days, team members are expected to be available and responsive to client needs throughout the coverage period. Active coverage hours run from 7:00 AM ET to 10:00 PM ET, supported by staggered shifts. One team member typically covers the early shift, approximately 7:00 AM ET to 5:00 PM ET, while another covers the midday/evening shift, approximately 12:00 PM ET to 10:00 PM ET.
Requests may occasionally arise outside of these hours due to urgent client priorities or business needs.
This Senior Visual Designer role is best suited for professionals who thrive in highly responsive, fast-moving environments and value the flexibility of a compressed schedule model with extended time off built into the rotation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Serve as the primary client point of contact during assigned coverage shifts, managing daily intake, clarification, prioritization, status updates, execution, and delivery of requests.
  • Create, adapt, version, and produce high-quality visual materials across digital, presentation, print, environmental, fabrication, installation, and production applications.
  • Use AI tools appropriately to accelerate design exploration, image and video generation, versioning, content adaptation, production efficiency, and workflow support.
  • Ensure all work aligns with approved brand standards, client direction, Truth Collective quality expectations, and applicable confidentiality, file management, naming, and operational protocols.
  • Prepare accurate, organized, production-ready files for vendor handoff, including print, fabrication, installation, proofing, packaging, timing, delivery, and quality-control needs.
  • Coordinate with visual designers, pod teammates, Truth Collective team members, client stakeholders, production partners, and vendors to keep work moving efficiently.
  • Maintain clear, proactive communication around request status, priorities, timing, dependencies, risks, escalation needs, and next steps.
  • Balance multiple concurrent requests with speed, accuracy, composure, responsiveness, and strong attention to detail.
  • Support real-time collaboration, live working sessions, and fast-turn production needs when required.
  • Document work status, decisions, and handoff notes to ensure seamless continuity across shifts and pod coverage.
  • Handle confidential client materials and communications with discretion, professionalism, and care.
  • Contribute creative, operational, and cultural value to Truth Collective and the client relationship.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Strong visual design, layout, typography, composition, hierarchy, image selection, and brand system skills across digital, print, and production applications.
  • Expert proficiency in macOS and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat; working knowledge of Figma and other relevant digital design and collaboration tools.
  • Deep print production expertise, including bleeds, crops, color profiles, resolution, linked assets, packaging, PDF settings, proofing, and vendor-ready file preparation.
  • Proficiency with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grok, Google Gemini, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and other emerging platforms to accelerate creativity, production, retouching, animation, versioning, research, and workflow efficiency.
  • Strong project coordination, prioritization, organization, file management, and deadline-management skills, with the ability to balance multiple requests quickly and accurately.
  • Confident client communication skills, including the ability to interface calmly and professionally with senior-level clients, internal teams, external vendors, and production partners.
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving ability, and composure in urgent, ambiguous, or high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously, take direction effectively, and make progress with limited oversight when needed.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, and cloud-based storage platforms, including Box.
  • Understanding of digital file optimization, accessibility considerations, and cross-platform design requirements.
  • Ability to manage handoffs, document work status, and maintain continuity across a rolling or shift-based coverage model.
  • Professional discretion when handling confidential client materials, communications, and production details.
  • Comfortable working non-traditional schedules which will include weekend and holiday coverage.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Art, Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or a related field preferred. Proven and relevant experience in design execution, production design, creative operations, project coordination, or agency/client-service environments required.
  • An equivalent combination of related work experience, training, and/or education sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job will also be considered.
  • Experience preparing files for print and digital, generating AI images and videos, coordinating with vendors, managing production details, and working directly with clients is required.

A PDF file (preferred format) or link to design samples is required to be considered for this position. Samples may include online or social media content, article or editorial design, infographics, charts & graphs, Photoshop retouching or compositing samples, and links to any video content you have created. To submit a PDF file, include it in the resume or cover letter file or reply to our application acknowledgement email with an attachment.
