How much do senior proofreader jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for senior proofreader in the United States is $27.65, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.43 and $33.65 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Are proofreaders still in demand?

Proofreaders, including senior proofreaders, continue to be in demand as companies and publishers seek accurate and polished content. The role often requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with editing tools, with opportunities available in publishing, media, and digital content sectors.

Is AI replacing proofreaders?

AI tools are increasingly used to assist proofreaders by identifying grammar, spelling, and style errors more efficiently. However, senior proofreaders still play a vital role in making nuanced editing decisions, ensuring tone consistency, and handling complex editing tasks that require human judgment. AI serves as a complement rather than a complete replacement in the proofreading process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Proofreader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Proofreader, you need exceptional attention to detail, advanced grammar and language skills, and several years of professional proofreading experience, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP, Chicago, or MLA), track-changes tools in Microsoft Word, and content management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure high-quality, error-free content that enhances brand credibility and meets publication standards.

What is the difference between Senior Proofreader vs Copy Editor?

AspectSenior ProofreaderCopy Editor
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in English, Journalism, or related field; proofreading certifications are commonOften requires similar credentials; editing certifications may be preferred
Work EnvironmentPublishing houses, media companies, freelance projectsPublishing, marketing agencies, corporate communications
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across publishing, journalism, and media industriesCommon in publishing, advertising, and content creation sectors
Primary FocusChecking for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errorsImproving clarity, style, structure, and overall content quality

While both roles require strong language skills and attention to detail, a Senior Proofreader primarily focuses on error correction, whereas a Copy Editor enhances content clarity and style. The roles often overlap but serve distinct purposes in the editing process.

How long does it take to proofread 50,000 words?

A senior proofreader typically reviews about 2,000 to 3,000 words per hour, so proofreading 50,000 words generally takes approximately 17 to 25 hours of focused work. Factors such as complexity of the text, required accuracy, and use of editing tools can influence the total time needed.

What are Senior Proofreaders?

Senior Proofreaders are experienced professionals responsible for reviewing written content to detect and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. They often oversee the work of other proofreaders, ensuring that all documents meet high standards of quality and consistency. In addition to error correction, Senior Proofreaders may also advise on style, clarity, and adherence to brand guidelines. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as publishing, advertising, and corporate communications. Typically, they have several years of proofreading experience and a strong command of language rules.

What are some common challenges Senior Proofreaders face when working with fast-paced publishing teams?

Senior Proofreaders often juggle tight deadlines and high volumes of content, especially when working within fast-paced publishing or marketing teams. Balancing accuracy with speed can be challenging, as they must ensure all documents are error-free while meeting strict turnaround times. Additionally, they frequently collaborate with writers, editors, and designers, requiring strong communication skills to clarify queries and maintain quality standards. Adapting to different style guides and managing last-minute changes are also typical aspects of the role.

What qualifications do you need to become a proofreader?

To become a senior proofreader, candidates typically need a strong command of language, excellent attention to detail, and proficiency in editing tools or style guides. A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field is often preferred, along with several years of proofreading experience in relevant industries.

Job description

Intro about Starburst:ย

Starburst is the data platform for analytics, applications, and AI, unifying data across clouds and on-premises to accelerate AI innovation. Organizations, from startups to Fortune 500 enterprises in 60+ countries, rely on Starburst for fast data access, seamless collaboration, and enterprise-grade governance on an open hybrid data lakehouse. Wherever data lives, Starburst unlocks its full potential, powering data and AI from development to deployment. By future-proofing data architecture, Starburst helps businesses fuel innovation with AI.

About the roleย

We're looking for a Senior Web Developer who takes immense pride in their craft. You won't just be "maintaining" a site; you'll be owning it. You are the bridge between a beautiful design concept and a high-performance reality.
We are constantly evolving. You'll own the front-end, manage the back-end (currently WordPress), and ensure every pixel and every line of code serves our mission. You'll partner with our Creative, Growth, and Marketing teams to ship work that moves the needle and creates great experiences for our users.

As a Senior Web Developer at Starburst you will:

  • Own the Experience: Develop and maintain a responsive, interactive, and user-friendly web presence. You'll handle everything from layout tweaks to deep technical functionality.
  • Performance & SEO: Ensure our site is lightning-fast and optimized for technical SEO. You understand that a millisecond of lag is a lost opportunity.
  • Design Partnership: Collaborate closely with our Brand and Design teams to translate UI/UX visions into living, breathing web pages. You have an eye for detail and won't settle for "close enough."
  • Optimization & Growth: Implement A/B tests and analytics tracking to help our Growth team understand what's working and what's not.
  • Technical Integration: Keep our marketing stack (CRM, Analytics, Email) humming by ensuring seamless integrations with the site.
  • Quality & Standards: Act as the gatekeeper for brand guidelines, accessibility (WCAG) standards, and data privacy. You test thoroughly because you care about the user's journey.
  • Future-Proofing: While we're on a stable stack now, you'll help us evaluate and eventually migrate to new technologies when the time is right.

Some of the things we look for:

  • 5+ years of experience in front-end or full-stack web development, specifically within a high-growth B2B SaaS or tech environment.
  • Mastery of the Fundamentals: Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript.
  • CMS Expertise: Significant experience building and scaling sites on platforms like WordPress (our current home), but a working knowledge of headless options (Contentful, Sanity) for the future.
  • Modern Frameworks: Proficiency with (or a deep interest in) React, Next.js, or similar frameworks as we look toward our future tech stacks.
  • The "Builder" Mindset: You are proactive. You don't wait for a ticket to fix a bug; you see a friction point and you solve it.
  • Design Sensibility: You actually care about how things look. You understand padding, typography, and why a specific animation makes the UX feel "premium."
  • Collaboration Skills: You can explain technical trade-offs to a marketer and brand strategy to a dev, while keeping projects moving forward.
Where could this role be based?
  • Location: This is a hybrid role ideally based in our Boston or San Francisco hubs (1-2 days per week in-office).
  • Travel: Expect about 25% travel for team offsites, onboarding, and hitting major milestones together.
