Job Title: Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering

Job Code: 42395

Job Location: Salt Lake City, UT (On-Site)

Job Schedule:9/80 Employees work 9 out of every 14 days- totaling 80 hours working- and have every other Friday off

Senior Manager, Mechanical Lead Team:

L3Harris is seeking a strategic engineering leader to oversee the Mechanical Lead Team within Mechanical Engineering. This Senior Manager role provides organizational leadership for the mechanical leads and senior engineers who guide design execution across multiple programs, product lines, and phases of the product lifecycle, from early concept development through production and sustainment.

The role is responsible for translating functional strategy into operational plans that strengthen delivery, workforce capability, engineering rigor, and technology readiness over a one- to two-year horizon. The Senior Manager will influence senior leaders and customers, develop future leaders, champion new approaches and technologies, and ensure the mechanical organization is positioned to meet business growth, product quality, and execution objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Mechanical Lead Team and provide direction to experienced mechanical leaders responsible for technical execution across multiple programs and customer commitments.
  • Develop workforce and staffing plans that ensure the right mix of skills, leadership depth, and technical capacity are available to support current work and future growth.
  • Establish and execute operational plans for mechanical engineering capability development, process maturity, tool strategy, and talent pipeline needs over the short to mid term.
  • Drive consistent mechanical engineering practices across the organization, including design reviews, peer reviews, quality expectations, metrics, lessons learned, and issue escalation paths.
  • Partner with directors, chief engineers, program management, systems engineering, electrical engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain leaders to align technical priorities with business priorities.
  • Guide the organization through complex technical and organizational problems that affect multiple teams, product lines, or customers, using structured root-cause analysis and sound engineering judgment.
  • Influence product architecture, packaging strategy, manufacturability, reliability, and design-for-cost decisions by ensuring strong mechanical leadership is embedded early in program planning and execution.
  • Champion new concepts, technologies, and methods that improve product performance, team effectiveness, and competitive differentiation.
  • Support business capture activities through customer engagement, proposal reviews, resource planning, technical risk assessment, and executive briefings.
  • Develop and mentor mechanical leads, managers, and senior engineers through coaching, succession planning, performance management, and intentional leadership development.
  • Recommend investments in tools, facilities, labs, and process improvements that increase organizational capability and reduce execution risk.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and a minimum of 12 years of prior related experience; graduate degree with a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant leadership experience within engineering, including experience leading experienced professionals, technical leaders, supervisors, or managers.
  • Broad background in mechanical engineering for complex hardware systems, including product development, design integration, manufacturing support, and problem resolution.
  • Demonstrated success influencing senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders on matters that materially affect execution, workforce strategy, or business results.
  • Experience building operational plans, improving engineering processes, and leading organizations through change while maintaining delivery commitments.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, including the ability to represent the function in customer interactions and senior leadership reviews.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, ruggedized electronics, or other highly regulated and high-reliability environments.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary product development teams or multiple mechanical teams across a portfolio of programs.
  • Knowledge of electronics packaging, structural and thermal design considerations, environmental qualification, and design-for-manufacturing best practices.
  • Experience developing technology roadmaps, IRAD concepts, capability growth plans, or other strategic engineering investments.
  • Familiarity with open architecture hardware standards, military environmental requirements, and customer-driven design assurance expectations.

Leadership Attributes

  • Thinks strategically while staying close enough to execution to remove barriers and improve outcomes.
  • Builds strong leaders by delegating well, coaching deliberately, and creating clear accountability.
  • Influences with credibility, clarity, and data rather than relying on title alone.
  • Balances innovation, speed, and disciplined engineering processes in a demanding environment.
  • Demonstrates resilience, sound judgment, and a strong sense of ownership for team and business results.
