What is the difference between Senior Process Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectSenior Process EngineerProcess Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, often with 5+ years experienceBachelor's degree in Engineering or related field, typically 1-3 years experience
ResponsibilitiesLeading process improvements, mentoring, project managementSupporting process development, data analysis, assisting senior staff
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, manufacturing plants, R&D departmentsManufacturing facilities, engineering teams, operational support

Senior Process Engineers typically have more experience, leadership duties, and oversee complex projects, while Process Engineers focus on supporting process development and implementation. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and engineering industries, but the senior role involves greater responsibility and strategic planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Process Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or process engineering, problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Expertise in process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), Six Sigma or Lean certifications, and familiarity with process control systems are highly valued. Outstanding analytical abilities, leadership, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for optimizing processes, ensuring safety and compliance, and leading teams to achieve operational excellence.

What does a Senior Process Engineer do?

A Senior Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing processes within manufacturing or production environments. They analyze workflows, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements to increase efficiency, safety, and product quality. Senior Process Engineers often lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure operational excellence. Their expertise is vital in industries like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and food processing.

What are some common challenges Senior Process Engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Senior Process Engineers often collaborate with professionals from various departments, such as operations, quality, and maintenance. A common challenge is aligning diverse priorities and communication styles to achieve shared project goals. Successfully managing these differences requires strong interpersonal and project management skills, as well as the ability to translate technical concepts for non-engineering colleagues. Regular meetings and clear documentation can help ensure everyone stays informed and engaged throughout the process.

Job description

Equinox Engineering Ltd. is a leading Calgarybased EPCM firm known for delivering innovative facility design and engineering solutions across natural gas, heavy oil, carbon capture, and emerging energy sectors. We partner with top energy producers across Canada and internationally, helping them build the next generation of highperformance, efficient, and sustainable facilities.

We're looking for a Process Engineering Discipline Lead - Gas Processing who brings deep technical expertise, strong leadership, and a passion for solving complex engineering challenges. In this role, you'll shape the design and execution of gas processing facilities - from earlystage concepts through detailed engineering and operational support. This is an opportunity to lead impactful work, mentor the next generation of engineers, and contribute to a diverse portfolio of projects that help drive energy innovation.

Why Join Equinox?
  • Meaningful work on highimpact gas processing, NGL recovery, and environmental/energy transition projects.
  • A peoplefocused culture that values technical excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Opportunity to lead multidisciplinary teams and influence design outcomes.
  • Exposure to diverse projects and clients across Canada and globally.
  • A flexible and supportive work environment designed for longterm career growth.
What You'll Do
As the Process Engineering Discipline Lead - Gas Processing, you will play a key role in delivering safe, efficient, and reliable facility designs. In this role, you will:

Technical Leadership
  • Lead the engineering of gas processing projects across all phases - Feasibility, Conceptual Design, DBMs, FEED, and Detailed Engineering.
  • Develop and validate process models and simulations for gas treatment, NGL recovery, sulphur recovery, acid gas injection, and turbo-expander systems.
  • Oversee and stamp major process engineering deliverables including H&MBs, PFDs, P&IDs, shutdown keys, control narratives, and engineering reports.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
  • Manage process engineering deliverable schedules, budgets.
  • Mentor intermediate, EIT's, and global workshare engineers.
  • Collaborate closely with PMPE, multidiscipline engineering teams, vendors, and clients to solve complex technical challenges.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
  • Lead P&ID and Process Hazard Assessments (PHA) reviews to ensure safe, operable, and regulatory-compliant designs.
  • Ensure engineering outputs meet API, ASME, ISO, and other regulatory standards.
Project Execution
  • Support commissioning, start-up, and operational optimization activities.
Technical Excellence
  • Familiar with both greenfield developments and brownfield additions or modifications.
  • Experience with sour gas processing and associated liquids handling.
About You
You're an experienced engineer who thrives in a technical leadership role and enjoys working on multidisciplinary projects. You bring:
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA.
  • A degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 12+ years of industry experience, ideally within gas processing and EPCM project environments.
  • A proven ability to lead engineering teams and deliver complex, highvalue projects.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines and with clients.
  • Advanced proficiency with process engineering software (HYSYS, UniSim, ProMax, etc.).
  • Customer-focused with a solutions-oriented attitude
Preferred:
  • Additional P.Eng. designation with EGBC.
  • Prior EPCM experience supporting large and midscale processing projects.
Ready to Apply?
If you're passionate about technical excellence, enjoy leading teams, and are looking for a place where you can grow your career while shaping innovative energy projects, we'd love to hear from you.
