How much do chemical engineering jobs pay per year?
What are some common career advancement opportunities for chemical engineers?
Chemical engineers can progress into senior engineering, project management, or leadership roles as they gain experience and demonstrate strong technical and interpersonal abilities. Many professionals also choose to specialize further into areas like process optimization, environmental compliance, or research and development. With additional certifications or an advanced degree, chemical engineers can move into executive positions, consulting, or academia. Continuous professional development and taking on increasingly complex projects can help accelerate career growth in this field.
What does a chemical engineer do?
A chemical engineer applies principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and engineering to develop and improve processes for producing chemicals, fuels, drugs, food, and other products. They work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, energy, manufacturing, and environmental protection. Their responsibilities include designing equipment, optimizing processes, ensuring safety standards, and researching new materials.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the chemical engineering position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Chemical Engineer, you need a strong background in chemistry, mathematics, and process engineering, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), knowledge of safety regulations, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license are valuable technical assets. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills are essential for tackling complex projects and collaborating across disciplines. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and innovative solutions to real-world industrial challenges.

With an expansive infrastructure network spanning Western Canada and North Dakota, we deliver essential solutions where they are needed most. Our partnerships focus on safely recovering oil and metals, disposing of liquid and solid waste, recycling materials such as metals, water, and oil, and reclaiming contaminated land to reduce environmental footprints.
SECURE is committed to innovation, helping our customers lower costs, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and exceed their business, safety, and environmental goals. We go beyond expectations — mitigating risks, reducing financial obligations, and maximizing value for our clients.
Join SECURE, where we step up to make a meaningful difference in the industries we serve and the world we share.
As our Chemical Treatment Specialist, you will support and advance the chemical treatment and neutralization operations at our Redwater facility. In this fast-paced role, you’ll ensure safe handling and optimization of inbound and outbound waste streams and help mitigate commercial and operational risk at the field level.
This role is based out of Redwater, AB.
As the Chemical Treatment Specialist, you will be part of a collaborative and safety-driven team that takes pride in operational excellence. This is an opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals who are committed to maintaining high standards while continuously improving how we operate.
This role operates on a Monday to Friday schedule and requires flexibility for travel, on-call responsibilities, and adjusted hours as needed to support operational demands.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for SECURE Redwater chemical treatment and neutralization processes
- Deliver facility training and contribute to ongoing program development to drive continuous improvement across Redwater operations.
- Receive, log, prepare, and analyze client samples, including but not limited to acids, bases, oils, water, and produced fluids.
- Perform bench-scale neutralizations of acids and bases, then support operations for large-scale neutralization.
- Support training and competency development, as well as the ongoing review and development of operational SOPs.
- Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and ensure operational readiness of all equipment.
- Mentor the operations team and support high-performance treatment and neutralization practices, including chemical purchasing and inventory management.
- Act as a field liaison for blend plans and operational quality initiatives, assisting operations in maintaining balance and supporting strong customer relationships.
- Support field-level issue resolution, identifying root causes and ensuring timely corrective actions.
- Assist in reporting and maintaining treatment and neutralization performance metrics.
- Provide hands-on operational support as needed, stepping in to assist the Redwater team and contribute to business needs.
- 3–5 years of experience in waste management, environmental services, or related environments.
- Experience supporting quality compliance programs, SOP development, and operational quality systems.
- Diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Technology, Environmental Technology, or a related field considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of ASTM quality determination, hydrocarbon testing, sampling systems (API 8.2), and blending practices.
- Valid H2S Alive and First Aid certification.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Safety-focused, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel, work flexible hours, and support on-call requirements.
- Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract required.
- Ability to successfully pass pre-employment A&D testing and wear respiratory PPE.
At SECURE, we focus on opportunities for growth and improvement; for our employees, our customers, our partners, and the communities we operate in. We are an energetic team, driven by the needs of our customers, and we care about making a meaningful contribution. We strive to attract, retain, and motivate employees by offering a competitive compensation package that recognizes employee contributions and performance.
